A Necessary Sin
Grade : A-

I have a weakness for books dealing with revenge. A Necessary Sin received quite a bit of positive buzz, and so, due in large part to its revenge-driven plot, I decided to give it a try. It's a choice I don't regret.

Stella Lawrence is only seven years old when her life is turned upside-down. Her mother is brutally murdered, and Stella herself is left for dead. The murderer didn't count on an FBI agent visiting a nearby apartment, and so, Stella's life was saved. Ever since that day, Stella has lived under the name Bleu MacAllister. It's safer for everyone if the world thinks Stella died just as her attacker intended.

Eighteen years have passed since that fateful day and Bleu lives for only one purpose. She is determined to kill the man who so heartlessly ended the life of her beloved mother. To this end, she spent time working for the FBI, training as an undercover agent, and now she's headed for Scotland where she plans to infiltrate The Fellowship, the criminal enterprise led by her mother's murderer. She plans to make Sinclair, the eldest son of the fellowship's leader, fall in love with her. From there, her enemy's murder should be easy to pull off.

Sinclair Breckenridge is a handsome, charismatic, successful man who will one day become leader of The Fellowship. He trusts very few people, and loves no one at all. He can have his pick of women, but Sin never lets anyone get too close. He never takes women to his own bed, preferring the anonymity of offices, storage rooms, or cheap motels. Then, Bleu MacAllister walks into his life, and Sin knows nothing will ever be the same. Suddenly, there's someone he'll risk everything to love.

Bleu and Sin make a wonderful couple. True, much of what Bleu tells Sin about herself is a lie, but the reader knows all her secrets. We're able to see just how right she is for Sin, and how loving him will help her put her demons to rest. Of course, neither Sin nor Bleu thinks things are quite that simple. Bleu is still intent on killing Sin's father, and Sin must learn to balance his position in The Fellowship with his love for an outsider. Will they overcome the odds and achieve their HEA?

This is an incredibly well-balanced book, full of sensuality and spine-tingling suspense and I love the way Ms. Cates balances the romantic elements with the suspenseful ones. The blossoming romance between Bleu and Sin changes them both in many ways, but the author doesn't overdo it. There's a sense of impending danger, even in the tenderest of love scenes. In my opinion, this is the mark of a well-written novel.

A Necessary Sin was nearly impossible for me to put down and I read it in just under twenty-four hours. I was eager to see how things would turn out for Bleu and Sin. The book ends on a cliffhanger, but the good news is that the other two novels in the trilogy have been released. This means I can easily pick them up and continue reading, and you can bet I'll be doing that before too long.
