A Letter from Laurie Likes Books
Welcome to All About Romance! We hope you enjoy your visit to our site. We are a site for readers, by readers, and we feature a great deal of material, with a tremendous amount of variety, for all lovers of romance novels.
When I started reading romance back in 1994, it quickly developed into an obsession. I’ve been writing online since 1996, when Leslie McClain “discovered” me for The Romance Reader. Sharing my enthusiasm for the genre with readers and authors has been my joy since then.
Since I started writing my interactive column At the Back Fence (fka Laurie’s News & Views) in early 1996, I’ve provided a different look at romance, strictly from a reader’s perspective. What makes All About Romance different from traditional romance publications and even non-traditional ones? The willingness of its contributors to be interactive on all fronts, and to bring an honest attitude to the genre. As a result, this site exists to bring together lovers of romantic fiction and to freely discuss anything and everything related to reading romance.
It has been my pleasure to provide the sort of “back fence” atmosphere readers crave. I’ll continue to do so for as long as you continue to visit. We do our best to keep our ears to the surface of the water, so to speak, and to listen for what bubbles up. This organic concept, I think, is a major factor in AAR’s success. Another, of course, is that we have such a tremendous talent base. Our reviewers, columnists, and editors have seemingly unlimited talent and ideas, and I like to think fostering creativity among this group is my main responsibility.
Originally from Los Angeles (I am a proud Valley Girl!), I moved to Dallas, Texas for college at Southern Methodist University at the age of 17. I fell in love with my cradle-robbing husband within a month of being away from home (he was a second year law student at the time) and we decided to settle in Dallas after we married four years hence. I have my Master’s in Public Administration – what better way to rebel against the privileged environment in which I was raised than to train and work in a career guaranteed little in the way of monetary rewards?
Before beginning my Internet career, I was a collections manager at the City of Dallas with a sizable staff and the responsibility for collecting millions of dollars. I may not work 60-hour weeks being a “mover and a shaker” any more, but I like to think this site offers a valuable service to the romance reading community. My obsession with work continues, but is now focused on this site, and with providing lovers of romance novels a place to shine.
When I’m not working at the site or reading, I’m spending time with my truly fabulous husband and our equally incredible daughter. They are both very supportive of the time this labor of love takes away from them, and I am strongly appreciative.
As for you, the reader – thank you, thank you, thank you – for your support and contributions which make this site the best reader’s site on the Internet! And thank you for your patience in 2005 as we underwent a massive site redesign and transferred more than 5,000 reviews into a custom-built reviews database. Many static pages remain to be reformatted into the “new” design, so your continued patience is greatly appreciated.
The wonderful thing about Tiggers
Is that Tiggers are wonderful things
Their tops are made out of rubber
Their bottoms are made out of springs
They’re bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy
Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun
Oh, the wonderful thing about Tiggers is
I’m the only one!
TTFN (ta ta for now), as Tigger said to Winnie the Pooh
