With our longevity (we’ve been online for nearly a decade), variety, and sensibility, we are the best romance novel site online to provide you targeted, effective, and affordable advertising.

Our nearly 7,000 pages of original content are entertaining, informative, honest, and highly regarded by readers, publishing professionals, and the media at large (Entertainment Weekly graded us A-, and our content has been featured/quoted in Salon.com, on CBC radio, and in books and academic works).

AAR is always open. Our content is current and timely because we update the site four or five times a week. And we are also highly interactive. Our five message boards are open 24-7, and some of our pages offer direct commenting ability.

Because of our diverse writing staff and the quality of our material, we attract a wide variety of readers in all ages. We present an excellent opportunity for those who wish to reach this large segment of the buying public – more than half of our readers spent at least $250 buying romances in 2005 (nearly 1/4 spent $500 or more).

We strive to be user friendly and easy to navigate; no other romance novel website offers a better, easier, or more comprehensive review search capability (there are more than 6,000 reviews our custom-built reviews database).

The general size and scope of AAR makes us unique in the marketplace. It’s almost impossible to find a romance novel web site with our level of traffic because we’ve been leaving competitors in the dust for years. Prospective advertisers may look forward to targeted ads on

[up to] thousands of pages of content, with ad views of at least 105,000 per month, for as little as $35/month.

Clients & Content:

We have worked with small and large (including Amazon.com) online booksellers, print and e-publishers including Harlequin/Silhouette, sellers of romantic goods and services, and a multitude of authors at all levels of publishing – lead authors, mid-list authors, and debuting authors. We keep our prices low so that new and lesser-known authors can afford to advertise, but best-sellers such as Judith Ivory, Deborah Smith, Laura Kinsale, Barbara Freethy, Karen Ranney, Christie Ridgway, Marilyn Pappano/Rachel Butler, Cherry Adair, Lisa Cach, and Tori Carrington have successfully advertised with us as well, and many have returned for additional campaigns.

We maintain total separation between editorial and advertising content at AAR. No author or book-specific ads can appear on any of the review pages at AAR proper, although we make exceptions for books whose proceeds are all donated to charity. This advertising restriction offers a tremendous opportunity for publishers, who may advertise entire imprints or lines on 6,000+ review pages, resulting in an extremely high number of ad impressions – approximately 50,000 per month – during a campaign. This restriction only applies to author and book-specific ads; if your product and/or service is unrelated, it may appear on any and all pages at AAR proper.

Two Sites To Choose From:

With the creation of AAR After Hours, our “off-topic” blog, in September 2006, there are now two avenues from which to choose for advertising with us. AAR proper, with its enormous amount of traffic, offers an advertiser up to thousands of pages upon which their banner ads may be viewed by hundreds of thousands of unique visitors a month. AAR After Hours (our new, “off-topic” blog), because it is a smaller venture, offers a very inexpensive option, but because we discount our advertising on the blog, slots are limited on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Advertising at AAR proper, either with banner ads on [up to thousands of] select pages, or in conjunction with “Romantic Teasers,” our paid advertising supplement, represents a wonderful opportunity for any company or individual looking to reach a large group of readers who have proven via other successful advertising campaigns and sales through us at Amazon that they will buy books. Advertising rates at AAR proper are very flexible. Advertisers pay as as little as $35/month to advertise directly at our site; the longer the campaign, the lower the price. Authors in particular find that fitting advertising at AAR in their promotional budgets is extremely cost-effective and have recently experienced more than 35,000 ad views per month.

We’ve just added a new component to our advertising options – advertising on our “off-topic” blog, AAR After Hours. Unlike advertising on AAR proper, where the fee depends on the length of the campaign and there are no limits to the number of advertisers because of our huge amount of traffic, slots are limited on AAR After Hours – and heavily discounted as well.

Advertising Options:

We offer three types of advertising at AAR; the first two are for advertising at AAR proper; the third, which is new, is for advertising on AAR’s “off-topic” blog, AAR After Hours.

Although we are not professional designers, we offer design services should you need them, and many of our clients do request that we design their ads. To see some of the other banner ads we’ve created in-house (in addition to the Christie Ridgway and AAR ads shown below), click here.

(A) “Banner” Ads Only at AAR proper: “Banner” ads required in two different sizes placed on hundreds, if not thousands, of pages. Ad specs for both required sizes:

  1. Traditional sized ad of 468×60 – in gif or jpg format, no larger than 60 kb in byte size, and if the ad’s background is white, it must have a built-in border

  2. Book-sized ad of anywhere between 120×200 and 150×200 – in gif or jpg format, no larger than 50 kb in byte size, and if the ad’s background is white, it must have a built-in border

The banner below is the traditional banner size and measures 468 wide by 60 tall. The banner to the above right measures 146 wide by 200 tall and is “embedded” into the page’s text. Both are necessary for advertising on AAR proper; if only the traditionally sized banner is provided, there will be a fee for creating the “book-sized” ad.

(B) Banner/Romantic Teasers Combination at AAR Proper: When an advertiser utilizes this option, her two different sized banner ads throughout the site link to a full-page ad in our Romantic Teasers section (the Romantic Teasers section is also linked to via the large graphic you see on our right – it is prominently displayed above the fold on our home page). Consider your full-page ad your “home away from home.” If you provide web-ready material, the fee for option two is the same as for option one…this is a great deal.

Content on your full-page ad can be changed as often as you like without incurring additional costs throughout the length of your campaign. But if you will be providing a web-ready page, please copy the source code from this template and paste your ad into the designated area to avoid a formatting fee. We will switch out banners throughout the length of your campaign for no cost only if they are provided web-ready. (C) Advertising at AAR After Hours, AAR’s “off-topic” blog: We use book-sized ads that appear “above the fold” in a very prominent location, and because this blog is “off-topic”, our pricing is too. This book-sized ad must conform to the same specifications as listed in (A) 2. above (between 120×200 and 150×200, in gif or jpg format, no larger than 50 kb in byte size, and if the ad’s background is white, it must have a built-in border).

Pricing & Payment:

The tables below provide pricing and payment information for ad campaigns and design services if requested for AAR proper – the longer the campaign, the lower the cost – down to $35/month for a campaign of at least four months in duration. Our system provides complete flexibility. If you will be providing all web-ready material, simply work with the table to your left below. If you also need design assistance, add your campaign fee with the design fee from the table below to your right (for one or both “banner” ads and/or a “full-page” ad) for your total.

Because advertising on AAR After Hours, however, is heavily discounted – our flat fee per campaign is $25 for two months – we limit the total number of advertisers at any point in time. If you would like to advertise on AAR After Hours and need us to design your ad for you, our design fee is $25.

Confused? Here’s an example: You are looking to advertise on AAR proper for three months – banners only – and you require design work for one of the ads (you’re providing the other). The advertising fee for three months is $120 ($40/month), the design fee for one ad is $25, and your total is $145. The number of views your ads will receive during a three month period at the current time is no lower than 105,000 – and may be as high as 150,000 – depending on what you are advertising. Both numbers, btw, are huge…based both on our tremendous traffic level and the sheer amount of content at the site.
