In this cozy fantasy romance we follow a witch who is trying to get her magic back with the help of her quirky friends at an inn. While the ending felt rushed and a little unclear to me, I thought it was a charming story with a sweet romance.

Sera Swan was one of the most powerful witches in Britain but when she was young, she used forbidden magic to bring her great aunt Jasmine back to life. Not only did she lose most of her magic, but she was also exiled from the British Guild of Sorcery. Now she is thirty and helping Jasmine with the inn. It’s a special place and a light in the dark that people in need are drawn to and they have created a found family.

Sera longs to get her magic back and is hopeful when she hears about a spell that could restore her powers. When she manages to get a copy of the spell, it’s in an old language she doesn’t understand. Enter Luke Larson, a magical historian, who finds his way to the inn with his nine-year-old, autistic sister, Posy. Posy has trouble hiding her magic (she really likes to levitate). Luke doesn’t plan to stay long; he just needs time to find a safe place to live where his sister can learn to control her magic. He’s thinking about Edinburgh where their parents are, even though they haven’t been much help. Sera asks Luke to help her translate the magic spell to restore her magic.

The romance begins when Sera and Luke realize what each of them are going through and how much they respect and care for each other. Sera is haunted by sad ghosts of herself in her past when she struggled with some mental health issues (she got help for them). Luke can also see her ghosts and he comforts her. Meanwhile, he struggles to keep Posy safe and Sera, along with everyone else at the inn, helps. Their romance is not light and fluffy; it has depth and is full of heart.

The inn is filled with a diverse group of characters and they are what make the book shine. There is Jasmine her great aunt (who has a club foot) and Theo, Sera’s eleven-year-old cousin and his best friend, Alex, who add enthusiasm and lightness to the story. Clemmie is a witch who accidentally cursed herself and is stuck as a fox. She is clever, mischievous and a little bit of a hot mess and she causes drama. There are several more whimsical characters that add to the fun and I found myself rooting for them all. The villain of the story is Albert Gray, the former chair of the Guild, who exiled Sera when she was young. He is a powerful witch who feels threatened by Sera and he isn’t happy when he finds out she is working to restore her magic.

The ending felt rushed and there were a few things that happened at the end that weren’t quite clear to me. So much of the book was focused on Sera getting her magic back and I would have loved the chance to see her and Luke enjoy some more lighthearted moments, especially at the end. Other than that, I adored the story’s magic, humor and heart and all of the loveable and accepting characters at the magical inn. I recommend this to readers looking for a sweet and cozy, witchy, fantasy with romance.
