Flirting with Temptation
Grade : C

Flirting With Temptation has a different take on the Big Misunderstanding: It happened six months before the book begins. This could have been interesting if the hero and heroine had met again at the beginning of the book. Unfortunately, the two don't reconnect for nearly 100 pages, leading to a very slow start.

Babette and Jeff were involved for three years, although their relationship seemed to consist solely of hot sex and constant fighting. Neither wanted a commitment at the beginning of the relationship, and they eventually broke up. Jeff quickly becomes engaged to a wealthy socialite, while Babette hasn't been seriously involved with anyone.

Babette doesn't just have commitment issues with relationships - she hasn't committed to anything. Although only 34, she has already failed in 23 different jobs and had numerous college majors. She's recently started studying body language and, with the encouragement of friends and family, decides to use her new skills to become The Love Doctor. She plans to help couples who have broken up find their way back to each other.

Skip ahead six months and Babette's business is a success. She still hasn't forgotten Jeff and is happy that he's no longer engaged. Just as her grandmother tries to convince her to fight for him, his ex-fiancée hires Babette to reunite her with Jeff.

I had a lot of problems with the first part of the book. In addition to being very slow going, I didn't really like Babette and wasn't convinced that she and Jeff had much of a relationship.

I also wasn't too impressed with Jeff. Following his recent experiences, he feels that women can't commit. Babette never made him feel important or necessary, while his ex-fiancée made him feel important and then left him to go yachting with another man. Jeff was a playboy before Babette, and is back to his old ways, bringing a different woman home every few days.

I felt that both Jeff, who is38 years old, and Babette were immature for their age and the only things either seems to remember is that they had great sex and that the other is gorgeous.

There's an interesting secondary romance featuring Babette's grandmother, and I enjoyed it more than the primary relationship. This surprised me, as I thought the grandmother was a caricature in the beginning of the book, based on her interactions with Babette. My feelings about her changed once the grandmother was featured without Babette.

I eventually warmed up to Babette and Jeff. Babette is actually a sweet woman and I liked how she worked to get senior citizens together and had a good time with them. I also came to believe that the two had changed enough that they could have a future together. I actually have some good memories of the latter part of the book. However, if not reading this for review, I never would have gotten that far. Overall, Flirting With Temptation is not awful, but the first part just didn't work for me.

My first memory is sitting with my mother on a blanket in our backyard surrounded by books and she is reading one of them to me. My love of reading was encouraged by my parents and it continues to today. I’ve gone through a lot of different genres over the years, but I currently primarily read mysteries (historical mysteries are my favorites) and romances (focusing on contemporaries, categories, and steampunk). When I’m not reading or working, I love to travel, knit, and work on various community projects.
