Knock Me for a Loop
Grade : B-

Knitting seems to be all the rage these days. No longer just for grandmas in rocking chairs, Knock Me For a Loop is an installment in the second knitting-centered series I’ve seen. (Not too many handicrafts get series; I haven’t seen too many books about scrapbooking, for example.) Devoted knitters will surely love those parts of the book, but those who don’t really care might be a bit more critical.

Talk-show host “Amazing” Grace Fisher went a little crazy when she discovered her fiancé cheating on her. We’re talking smashed car windows and slashed tires, keepsake destruction, and dog theft. Zack Hoolihan broke her heart. But then he’s injured in his position as goalie for a pro hockey team, he falls into a slump and even his friends give up on him.

Zack didn’t cheat on Grace, and is in fact still in love with her, so when she comes to whip him back into shape and get him to stop moping, he has some incentive to actually start trying to recover. As the two are brought together again, Grace has to face the question of whether Zack actually cheated on her, and what it could mean for them both if he didn’t.

There was a lot about Zack that seemed too good to be true. However, on the whole he balanced out. He may know how to knit and like the same soaps as Grace, but he also has an immature sense of humor and has some very alpha tendencies. It felt a bit uneven at times, but remained, overall, very precariously balanced.

He and Grace were very well suited for each other. She has a feisty side to her that perfectly matches Zack’s sense of humor. I really enjoyed their banter. However, Grace does not quite embody her name. Even for a scorned woman, her revenge was drastic. Honestly, I don’t know how Zack was able to forgive her. I sure wouldn’t be able to. There was a disconnect between her burn-in-hell search for vengeance, and her commitment—albeit slightly unwilling—to helping him recover. People don’t go from being unable to be in the same room with someone to becoming a live-in nurse in a month. Also, when did she work? We sure didn’t see her going in to film her show. Which brings me to another point… a popular talk show, filmed in Cleveland? Not to knock Ohioans, but Cleveland isn’t known to be the center of national media.

There were other things that weren’t explained very well or left me with questions, like how Zack didn’t kill Grace (or at the very least send her to the hospital) during their “cute meet” of hitting her in the head with a hockey puck, or how exactly some half-naked woman wound up in Zack’s bed.

The book was funny and sexy, despite its flaws. I left the book with some complaints, but overall I really enjoyed reading it. Grace and Zack were so well matched, it mostly made up for my frustrations.
