AUDIO: Misdirected

This fun audio recording brought back memories of Lucy Parker’s London Celebrities series which I loved. Here, we have actors working on a popular Bridgerton-like TV series. The opening chapter had me laughing hard and I loved seeing behind-the-scenes glimpses of this show mixed with humor and romance.

Hattie Merton plays a well-loved character in the smash hit, Leicester Square, a period TV show adapted from a popular romance novel. She is surprised when she reads the new script and sees that her normally, level headed character will be having a torrid affair with the swoony villain of the show, who is played by Anthony Rafe.

In real life, Anthony is handsome and comes from a wealthy family. He comes off as standoffish and arrogant and has perfected the art of looking bored while Hattie is sweet and tries her best to get along with everyone. After four seasons, she is ready to try doing something different with her life but is afraid to make changes. Her family didn’t have a lot of money growing up and she is trying to save her money while she can. She hears there are going to be bonuses and she really wants one.

Hattie and Anthony struggle with their first kiss in rehearsal – it comes off as cold and unfeeling. They don’t really know each other well so when Anthony moves into the flat next door, Hattie visits him and gives him a special gift she made with hopes they can do better in their scenes together, especially their on-screen love scenes. Anthony appreciates her thoughtful gift and I began to suspect he’s not as immune to her as he lets on. The tension builds between them during their love scenes, as they fall for each other in real life and it gets steamy.

I loved how protective Anthony is of Hattie and how she feels that Anthony is the first man to really see her for who she is. The story peels away in layers and I hesitate to say too much more because I don’t want to give anything away as we learn more about the characters, their work drama, dreams and their families.

This audiobook is narrated by Nicola Coughlan, whom I recognized as Penelope from Bridgerton. It took me a minute to get used to her accent and understand what was going on in the beginning of the story. But once I realized they were actors starring in a period production of a Bridgerton style TV show and caught on to the humor, it was a lot of fun. Hattie is snarky and she makes Anthony smile (and me too). Gwilym Lee performs Anthony’s voice and I enjoyed the dual PoV.

I loved being back in Lucy Parker’s world with all of the fun and drama we saw in her fabulous London Celebrities series. I hope we get more books related to Misdirected – this one is a keeper!

(Currently, Misdirected is only available as an Audible Original. For readers wondering if there will be a print version of the book, the author is working on it and hopes to have more information soon.)
