Road Trip with a Rogue

I was all in for this spicy historical road trip romance! Road Trip with a Rogue is the third and final book in the Her Majesty’s Rebels series and the women that star in each story are the rebels! There’s a fiercely independent heroine who became frustrating at times, but the passion and adventure kept the novel lighthearted and entertaining.

Daisy knew Lucien when she was eighteen and he was twenty-four–he is a friend of her brothers’. She was fascinated by him and snuck into a party to see him the night before he left for the Peninsula War. They shared a kiss, he rejected her–he thought she was too young–and she was terribly hurt when he rejected her.

Now, it’s five years later and they meet again when she stumbles onto highwaymen trying to rob Lucien’s carriage. She is a duke’s daughter, who works as a private investigator, and is chasing after an heiress on her way to Gretna Green to elope. Lucien offers Daisy a ride in his ducal carriage so he can look after her. He knows that Daisy is the one for him and he wants her as his duchess (he thinks she is fierce, loyal and passionate) but she is hesitant to trust him (even though she can’t stop thinking about him) so he has some convincing to do.

Their road trip has bandits, kidnapping, valiant rescues and steamy love scenes. It’s exciting when Daisy whips out her knives and throws them with perfect aim and very dramatic when Lucien comes to her rescue. There is a secret Lucien is keeping from her and so there is a twist and some drama with that.

It got spicy when they shared passionate kisses–‘the taste of him washed over her, so dark and forbidden she thought she might faint’–but I was surprised to see them travel without a chaperone. When they were spotted by a gossip, I was frustrated by Daisy when she rejected Lucien’s offer to marry her and told him she wanted to marry someone who loved and respected her.

The story mainly takes place in 1817, other than some flashbacks to their past, and I had to suspend belief when Daisy continued to refuse to marry Lucien even though she faced scandal. But I enjoyed their lighthearted adventure together and felt they were pretty perfect for each other with their witty banter and years of yearning.

I haven’t read the first two books in the series, but for those that have, there are familiar characters that make appearances, mainly Daisy’s friends and fellow spies, Tess and Ellie. I was glad that this third book really focused on Daisy and Lucien even though I would have loved to see a little more of them all at the end as the series wrapped up. Readers like me, who are in the mood for a steamy road trip romance with a rogue and a rebel might enjoy this.
