Seducing a Scottish Bride

Baubles meant to draw the eye to the privates were just not enough to make Seducing A Scottish Bride anything beyond mildly interesting.

Gelis MacKenzie is the much sought-after, beautiful daughter of a powerful Scottish chieftain and a woman of magical abilities that she discovers shortly before her father is forced through a debt of honor to give her in marriage to a man whose family is cursed. From her visions, she knows her betrothed is her soul mate and she’s eager to take her place by his side.

Ronan MacRuari’s family suffers a curse due to the actions of an infamous ancestor who stole a sacred stone. A group of magical men now stalk the family seeking the return of the stone and until that happens, nothing good will happen for the MacRuari family. After burying two wives, Ronan believes that he is cursed above all others in his family. When his grandfather, the chieftain of his clan, arranges for yet another marriage, he is adamantly opposed to the idea, regardless of who the unlucky female is.

When thrown together the two have opposing goals: Gelis’s is to get married and stay that way whereas Ronan’s is to avoid marriage at all costs. Ronan has a problem though – he can’t resist the lures that Gelis puts out. Gelis, on the other hand, seeks to make his life brighter by solving the mystery curse plaguing his family.

For those who like a happy-go-lucky heroine, Gelis is certainly it. She knows that Ronan is destined for her and is determined to make him realize it, too. However, I found the constant nipple peep show at the top of her bodice, jewels placed in strategic areas, and breasts allowed to jiggle out in the open annoying and desperate. If I were the hero, I’d resist too. While there’s nothing specifically wrong with Ronan, there’s really nothing special or memorable about him either, which is one of the main problems with the characters of the story.

Put simply, the plot needed more depth to make the intriguing paranormal elements more captivating. Since Gelis has a special ability to see the future and to share her visions with others, I wanted her to actually use both more throughout the story. The magical men were interesting, but they weren’t featured enough to add a much-needed element of suspense. As Seducing a Scottish Bride is, it’s just an average read.

For a historical with strong paranormal elements, they were not well developed, making Welfonder’s novel hard to recommend.
