Shattering Dawn
This is the third and final book in the Lost Night Files series about three women who were strangers and woke up strapped to gurneys at the Lucent Springs Hotel in the middle of an earthquake and fire with no memory of how they got there! The three women started a podcast about their lost night called The Lost Night Files. It has romance, suspense, and psychic powers. I’ve enjoyed all three books but this one is my favorite!
Amelia Rivers is being stalked by a man she sees at night outside of her apartment. She has a phobia of the dark since her lost night at the hotel but manages to go outside and take pictures of the creeper. Amelia is a gifted aura reading and she tries to capture his aura on film. She calls Gideon Sweetwater, a private investigator, whom she found on a list of people who, like her, were involved in an old research study. It’s where she thinks the villain found out about her psychic powers. She hopes Gideon can help discover who is after her and help her uncover who was behind her lost night at the hotel.
Gideon is recovering from a gunshot wound in his leg when he gets Amelia’s call. He is an investor gifted with psychic talent, so he is very wealthy. While his is not convinced of her aura reading abilities, he is intrigued by her and her case and decides to take it on. Together they come up with three suspects that include her ex-therapist who has been trying to meet up with her, a deranged podcast fan, or someone that was involved with her lost night. They decide to go back to the old hotel where Amelia had her lost night to look for clues. Gideon can also induce nightmares which comes in handy. Plus, Amelia and Gideon have talents that work well together and they are able to help each other as they grow close.
This feels more light hearted than some of Krentz’ other books. Amelia loves photography (one of her psychic talents) but it’s hard for her to have a steady income with it and there’s humor around that. Gideon has an elderly uncle that shows up to help with the case who is quirky in a fun way. There’s even a sweet side to one of the villains.
The story’s main focus is on the mystery and I would have loved a little more romance, maybe a date that’s not totally focused on their mystery. But I enjoyed both Amelia and Gideon and I hope we get to see Amelia’s friend, Phoebe’s, story next!
This is one of my favorites of Krentz’ paranormal suspense stories and it stands well alone. It’s not necessary to read the first two books in the series but it enhances the experience if you do. While the mystery about the lost night is solved, the podcast friends believe there is still an undercover evil enterprise with someone trying to take advantage of people with paranormal talents. Happily, this leaves the door open for us to get a new series from Krentz and I can’t wait!

I always have mixed thoughts on JAK; she tries all sorts of genres and always does pretty well with them, but I like her fantasy stuff a little more than her procedurals.
She’s got a new Paranormal/Fantasy (with dust bunnies), It Takes a Psychic, coming out in June and I really like it. She does have reoccurring evil characters in several of her books named Spooner but I try not to take it personally:)
That’s on my TBR!
