Three's A Charm
Grade : C-

Some people like vampires, but I've always been fond of witches. Who needs eternal life when you can conjure things out of thin air or influence people? The witch characters were what drew me to Three's A Charm and I liked them more than the mortals, but in the end I think I would have had more fun watching a rerun of Bewitched.

Married witches Mini and Reuben Costello have lost their powers. Their only hope for getting them back is to redeem themselves with good deeds. The perfect opportunity comes in the form of a job at Romance Connection, a dating service. Holly Wentworth, the proprietress, makes her living matching couples, but the only male in her life is her dog. When handsome widower Lance Wilder comes in to avail himself of her services, Mini and Reuben are convinced they will make a perfect couple.

Lance is willing, but Holly is hesitant. In the first place, she has a rule against dating clients, and besides, she's not convinced Lance is over his late wife. Meanwhile, Mini and Reuben are having difficulties adapting to the mortal world, and Mini is afraid they are growing apart.

Three's A Charm starts out cute, then rapidly becomes hokey. Mini has a crystal ball. Her best witch friend, Xonia, takes on the form of a talking cat. Mini and Reuben are a loving, likable secondary couple, but I had problems with the main couple. I found Lance a little creepy. He came off more as a slick playboy than a grieving husband. Perhaps everything he learned about women before his marriage came from '70's-era copies of Playboy. On their first date, he insists on peeling Holly's shrimp and feeding them to her. He also makes suggestive comments about another woman to make Holly jealous. As for Holly, she is portrayed as a strong independent woman, but when she gets near Lance, she goes ditzy.

There's already more than enough going on in the plot when an evil warlock appears who wants to break up Holly and Lance (to keep Mini and Reuben from getting their powers back, I suppose). The thing is, they don't need them, not for matchmaking anyway. They have the very convenient and still functional powers of Xonia. I would have liked it if they had become more self-reliant, and if more time had been spent showing them trying to adapt to the mortal world.

As a love story, Three's A Charm is perfectly adequate. The paranormal aspects are a little clichéd. If you want a witch fix, this may leave you wanting.
