Underneath It All
Grade : B+

In my experience books in the Blaze series tend to focus their plots within the bedroom. Because I'm more interested in reading books that focus outside of it, I tend to stay away from them. However, I was pleasantly surprised with Underneath It All. The author manages to combine great sex with an intriguing and romantic storyline.

Lori Borrill's newest is the second in the Million Dollar Secrets continuity series about a group of women who win millions in a lottery. In it TV producer Nicole Reavis finds herself at a charity bachelor auction and meets the eyes of one of Atlanta’s most eligible bachelors, Devon Bradshaw. She is immediately and intensely attracted, and makes a bid to spend a romantic evening with him. She does not win the bid, but decides it is for the best considering the myriad issues with which she has been struggling.

Devon tries to get close to Nicole the entire evening, and hopes that she bids on and wins him. Devon is disappointed when she does not, but doesn’t let that stop him. He is too attracted to her to let her walk out of the room and out of his life. He acts on his attraction, asking her out that very night. They spend a romantic evening together, and let nature take its course. For Nicole, Devon is a “fun distraction” – nothing more. Devon thinks otherwise, convinced after only a few hours in her company that he wanted it to be more than a one-night stand. He sets about trying to convince her he is worth forever.

Nicole and Devon are very real characters, struggling with real issues. Nicole recently discovered that she was adopted and fled to Atlanta to come to terms with her new reality. Devon is trapped by family obligations, having taken over the helm at his father’s company. She no longer knows who she is anymore or who her family is while he longs to break free from the ties that bind him to his family. They both deal with these issues, talking to each other about them, and supporting each other. Add to these struggles the friend who believes she is entitled to some of Nicole’s lottery proceeds, and you find yourself utterly absorbed by this book. We are introduced to several other characters. The author should be applauded for giving them enough depth and weaving them into the fabric of the story to make it even more interesting.

Underneath It All is one of the best Blaze romances I've read in a long time. It successfully strikes a balance with the sexual intensity and an interesting story line with intriguing characters. Nicole and Devon felt real to me, and their issues resonated with me. More importantly I felt that they had a deep connection - one that existed outside the bedroom. What they do in the bedroom is red hot, and Blaze fans will not be disappointed. However, it is their love and support for each other that left me feeling utterly satisfied.
