Wild and Wrangled

I’ve so enjoyed the Blue Ranch series and Wild and Wrangled is no exception. It’s a sweet second chance, cowboy romance. The story is lovely and, to me, bittersweet– it’s the last book in the Rebel Blue Ranch series and I hate to see it end.

Camille (Cam) has just been stood up at her wedding. It was going to be a marriage of convenience to make their parents happy but Graham left her a note saying that he couldn’t go through with it. Cam goes to the Devil’s Boot Saloon to hide out and that’s where Dusty finds her. Dusty and Cam were high school sweethearts and might still be a little in love. He was relieved to hear she didn’t get married but he was worried about her and wanted to make sure she’s okay. He found her crying at the bar and took care of her, taking her to get food and clothes (she was still in her wedding dress) until she was ready to go back home that night. We can see that Dusty and Cam had been deeply in love and had gone through a bad break up.

In the present day, Cam is a real estate lawyer for a law firm in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, two hours from her home town of Meadowlark and the Rebel Blue Ranch. She is a single mom from a one-night stand with Gus (Lost and Lassoed). They are friends now and get along well as they co-parent their seven-year-old daughter, Riley. Cam’s parents never paid much attention to her and were critical of everything she did so she is glad Riley has her and Gus’s big family to love and support her.

Dusty came back home to Meadowlark a year ago after being away for over ten years (he and Cam are both thirty-two). He worked as a cowboy from Alaska to South America and while he loved seeing the world, he was ready to come home and was excited when he was offered the job of running the horse sanctuary at the Rebel Blue Ranch. In his spare time, he’s been helping his mom make gorgeous homemade furniture and he also does detailed leather work. Cam and Riley end up renting the house next door and he looks out for them and helps them with repairs.

Whenever we see Cam and Dusty together, it’s obvious they are still crazy for each other but Cam is hesitant to get involved with him again. It’s a slow burn until they are stuck in a snow storm together and finally give in to their attraction. They begin a relationship and while there are still a few hiccups, it’s special see them finally get their HEA. (They’ve had eyes on each other all through the series.) I have to say, Dusty is one of the best book boyfriends I’ve read in a long time. His sweetness and love shine through from the notes he writes her in high school up to the beautiful love letters he writes her later.

My one quibble was with Cam. It was clear that Dusty worshipped the ground she walked on but she held herself back from him for months. Also, a big part of the story was how Cam was always trying to please her parents and I would have liked more of a resolution with that in the story. I enjoyed getting to see characters from the other books in the series and how they naturally fit into this story. I think it’s helpful to have read some of the other books in the series but it’s not necessary.

Wild and Wrangled is a happy and satisfying conclusion to the Rebel Blue Ranch cowboy romance series in the mountains of Wyoming. I was lucky to visit the area last summer and I love how Lyla Sage portrays the area beautifully in her stories. I hope we get to see more cowboy romances from her in the future.
