Today’s Steals and Deals at AAR…..
This book, well, it’s probably one of my favorite reads of the past five years. I read it a year ago and I still think about it daily. In my review, I wrote,
I read this book in a day. When I turned the last page, I found myself in tears, not because the ending is tragic but because it is not. For though The Light Pirate limns a not-so-removed world, one we rightly fear, it is a story of hope and resilience. Woven through its warnings is the belief that we can survive, even thrive, if we have one another.

Reel is the first in Kennedy Ryan’s Hollywood Renaissance series featuring Black creatives. Director Canon Holt’s six-month search for the woman to star in his biopic of a forgotten Black musical legend comes to an end when he sees Neevah Saint take the stage as a Broadway understudy. He doesn’t care that she’s an unknown, or that her background is in theater. It’s Neevah, he tells the studio, or it’s nobody. And after being thrown off a previous film by the lead actress when they broke up, he will absolutely not get involved with Neevah. No matter how much he wants to.

Life is pretty scary right now, and diversions can feel few and far between, but don’t despair! Maya Rodale’s An Heiress to Remember, the third installment in her Gilded Age Girls’ Club series, made me smile pretty much from start to finish. On the surface, it’s a light-hearted love story, but if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find a ton of female empowerment, something I can’t get enough of these days.

A Gentleman Never Keeps Score is a touching, sexy, and gently humorous read, and I’m thoroughly intrigued by the set up for book three glimpsed at the end. The secondary characters are well-realised and I especially loved Hartley’s adopted ‘family’ – including a three-legged dog, a former prostitute and a young woman whose family disowned her when she became pregnant out of wedlock – whose interactions with him show clearly that Hartley is far from the aloof, cold man he believes he has become. Watching him regain his sense of self and rediscover his capacity for love and affection was truly lovely, and I closed the book with a smile of my face, confident that he and Sam were in it for the long haul.
