OK, I’m taking a moment to mourn the fact that Thomas doesn’t write historical romance anymore. Sniffs…..

This one is just so good.  As Caz wrote, 

As is the case with the other books I’ve read by this author, what really sets her stories apart from the crowd is the depth and complexity of the characterization. Felix may be an underhand cad in many ways, but the things that make him The Ideal Gentleman are not completely fabricated. Beneath it all, he’s a genuinely kind and charming man and despite his parents’ terrible example, he’s a romantic at heart. When he admits to himself that the accusations of selfishness Louisa has leveled at him are true, he is unwavering in his determination to do something that’s just for her; he fosters her interest in astronomy and meticulously plans lessons in maths and physics to further her understanding. His behavior towards her mother and sisters is adorable and once he finally realizes that what he had thought of an obsession with Louisa is actually a deep and abiding love, he’s terrified – but tells her how he feels anyway.

Thomas left historical romance to write her Lady Sherlock series. This is the sixth in that series. In our review, I wrote:

Thomas is a gorgeous writer, her descriptions of people and places are grounded and believable. Her characters are interesting and her sly sense of humor is a gift. Ash and Charlotte are lovely together – I really would like to see far more of them as lovers – and Charlotte’s compassion for her sisters is boundless. I admire the braininess of these books even as it impedes my pleasure.

It seems like everybody adores Emily Henry. This one got a B+ from us. We wrote:

I love, love, love Alex. He’s such a sweetie; kind, generous, and has a huge heart. Following a family tragedy, he had to mature at a young age and be a parental figure to his younger brothers. He’s a teacher, a cat dad, and wants to be husband and father; he feels real, and his actions and feelings feel true to his character at every turn. I would recommend this book for Alex alone!  There’s a strong ring of authenticity to Poppy as well – even though at times she can seem like something of a millennial stereotype – and her family and her feelings toward them have a lot of weight and really add to the reader’s understanding of her.  In fact, all the characters are incredibly strong, even the ones we meet only briefly. The story lends itself to a large cast, and each voice feels authentic, each character fully-formed. Character relationships are also very well-developed; Poppy and Alex have a really raw, emotional connection. There’s also the fact that the chemistry between them is PALPABLE and very sexy. Their relationship is a tender, aching love that is slowly revealed throughout the story and events from the past, and present.

The Duke at Hazard is a fun, fast-paced and thoroughly enjoyable historical romance that is, at its heart, a story about growing up, self-discovery and finding that one person who brings out the best in you and helps you to realise your full potential. Being a KJ Charles story there is, of course, plenty of wryly observed social commentary, a dastardly villain who gets his well-deserved comeuppance, a pair of likeable, superbly characterised leads and high-jinks and shenanigans galore.

Jackie Lau is a Canadian author writing diverse romantic comedy, something she definitely achieved in her first Kwan Sisters novel, Grumpy Fake Boyfriend (free here). I thoroughly enjoyed that story about the romance that results when an introverted male science fiction writer does a friend’s sister a favor by playing her boyfriend for a beach weekend.  In Mr. Hotshot CEO, the author turns her sights on another of the Kwan sisters, who ends up in an unusual situation with a handsome, very rich, workaholic CEO. She also tackles the more serious subject of depression in an authentic but not depressing way (a feat in itself) to make for a thoughtful, funny and uplifting romance.
