When Madeline Hunter is on her game, she’s very good. We really enjoyed this one. (Our review is here.)

Madeline Hunter begins her Decadent Dukes Society series with an engaging, slow-burn romance.  The Most Dangerous Duke in London takes its time building a relationship between the main characters while drawing the reader deeper into rivalries and intrigues simmering between two influential London families.

Receiving a summons from the Countess of Marwood is something of a surprise to Adam Penrose, Duke of Stratton.  For generations, the Penrose and Cheswick families have been at odds, so the Countess’ desire to heal the old wounds is immediately suspect.  Arriving at her home it becomes clear that the Countess is scheming to protect her grandson, the new Earl of Marwood, against rumors that Adam has returned to England to settle old scores and investigate the circumstances that led to the previous Duke of Stratton’s death.  Hoping to align the two families through marriage, the Countess offers Adam a betrothal to her seventeen year old granddaughter; however it is the elder granddaughter, Lady Clara Cheswick, who catches his attention when she gives him the cut direct rather than giving him an audience.  Intrigued, Adam’s interest grows as Clara makes it very clear that she doesn’t approve of her sister being offered as a sacrificial bride.  Impressed and just the smallest bit aroused by her unaffected manner towards him, Adam decides then and there that Clara is the Cheswick woman that he wants.  He also hopes that Clara’s close relationship with her late father might allow for insights that will help in his search for justice for his own family.  As a man of action Adam wastes no time and proposes to Clara on the spot.

Lady Clara doesn’t take the Duke’s proposal seriously considering the animosity between their families, nor is she particularly interested in being married to anyone at all.  With the generous settlements given her after her father’s death, Clara is a woman of independent means.  To lose control of the lands and money willed to her just because the lay says that everything belonging to a woman automatically belongs to her husband upon her marriage seems unjust, especially when that money can be spent on more fulfilling enterprises.  Under the nose of society, Clara has funded and published a journal focused on issues relevant to the women of London that gives a voice to ladies across all social classes.  Also in the spirit of liberation, Clara has set-up her own household away from her controlling grandmother and dutiful younger brother.  Stratton’s attention can only complicate her life, yet Clara still finds herself flattered by his attempts to get her alone or to pursue her despite her refusals.

I love historicals not set in Regency England. This one is an American and we gave it a pleased B+.

John Patrick Sutherland is known to British forces only as “Star Rider,” and he has been a thorn in their side for months. Riding the seas with his loyal crew, he raids British ships and takes their cargo for the Rebel cause. But one night his luck runs out, and his ship goes down in the Delaware River. The severely wounded John Patrick instructs his first mate to take him to his half-brother, Noel Marsh, in Philadelphia. Though Noel is a loyalist, he is also a doctor, and John Patrick sees this as his only choice.

Noel takes care of him, and takes him to the home of the Maude Carey to convalesce. The Careys are loyalists who run a hospital in their home. While the home is Maude’s, it is really her niece Annette that does all the work for the hospital. Annette and her father Hugh were run off their farm by a Rebel mob, and Hugh was tarred and feathered. Since that night, Hugh has refused to speak, and Annette has taken refuge in caring for wounded British soldiers. When Noel brings John Patrick to the Carey’s home, he tells them that John Patrick is a Lieutenant in the British army who was ambushed by Rebels. He tells Annette that the patient needs lots of rest, and hopes that she will simply leave him alone. Neither Noel nor John Patrick feel right about deceiving the Careys, but the British are combing Philadelphia for the Star Rider, so they feel they have no choice.

John Patrick does try to avoid Annette at first, but he finds her attractive and interesting, and he can’t resist talking to her. While he doesn’t agree with her political leanings, during his talks with her he comes to understand her viewpoint. But as his feelings for her deepen, he begins to despise himself for deceiving her. When the time comes for him to leave, he intends to slip out quietly, but unfortunately, his identity is discovered at the last minute, and he is forced to take Annette and her father captive.

Annette, who was beginning to love her “British lieutenant” is shattered by his duplicity, and it seems like John Patrick can never regain her trust. Even if he could, there is still the matter of their conflicting loyalties. As the rest of the action-packed novel plays out, Annette and John Patrick must balance their loyalty to their respective causes with their growing love for each other.

This isn’t perfect and it definitely has old skool vibes but we enjoyed it and it is on sale.

When the book begins, Lady Claire Lynes is quite literally clinging for her very life on a rocky seaside ledge. Mysteriously abducted by brutes who plan to murder her, she has managed to elude her kidnappers only to be cornered with the churning sea as her only means of escape. Enter Hugh Battoncourt, English spy who finds himself on the same seaside ledge expecting to find Miss Sophie Towbridge, a courtesan with treasonous letters she wishes to sell to the French government. Hugh mistakes the cowering Claire for the courtesan and, before you know it, our heroine finds herself aboard Hugh’s ship on her way to France.

Not only does Hugh think Claire is a trollop, he thinks she’s a treasonous trollop – hardly an auspicious start to any relationship. And with the enforced proximity of a rough crossing to the French coast, Hugh and Claire have plenty of time to rail at each other, hold each other at gunpoint, engage in the old turn-your-back-while-I-undress-and-struggle-with-my-buttons thing, and, of course, fight their fierce attraction. Eventually Hugh is brought to realize that he has, indeed, abducted the wrong woman, while the emotionally bruised and battered Claire begins to feel her first real stirrings of passion.

When the two finally arrive in France, Hugh, who now believes completely in Claire’s innocence, plans to send her back to England while he continues on his clandestine mission. But treachery interferes and – dangerously close to being taken prisoner by the dastardly French – our hero is saved only by some pretty quick thinking on the part of our brave heroine. But, despite his feelings for Claire, Hugh is a man on a mission and even though the two spend an idyllic and passion-filled night in a remote French farmhouse, the morning after finds Claire bereft and alone with no sign of the man she now loves.

Clearly, their paths will cross again. And when they do some months later in London, Claire is surprised to discover that her mysterious lover is both more and less than the man she believed him to be.
