Today’s Steals and Deals at AAR…..

So many of our readers adore Kelly. We gave this one a B+.

One of my favorite aspects of this book is the history of the War of 1812 as related by an American on British soil. The Brits in Grace’s village all believe that “once an Englishman, always an Englishman” and don’t understand why the Americans have such a problem with impressment. Rob’s explanations go a long way toward changing their opinions. Rob’s search for any news of his home fills the reader with urgency, and his anguish when he reads about Washington D.C. burning is palpable.

Another thing I loved was how Rob’s American thinking affected those around him. He treats everyone the same – gentry or common-folk – and expects to be treated with respect in return. To Grace, who has experienced both ends of the social spectrum, Rob’s attitude is a revelation. Grace’s conversion to the American way of thinking is delightful to read.

This is a super fun series starter. We wrote:

I was very happy with both and found myself laughing out loud throughout this book. Nice Girl’s Don’t Have Fangs is a light, humorous, “Sookie Stackhouse meets Queen Betsy” listen. Small town librarian Jane Jameson developed her sense of snarky, sarcastic humor in defense of always being the smart/geeky girl who never quite fit in. Now, to top it off, she has to choose between death or vampirism. On the plus side, her handsome new sire Gabriel, appreciates both her sharp brain and tongue.

This is another winner.

As always, Ms. Ryan does a lovely job of setting her story within a rich historical tapestry. While the London Blitz was a horrific event, full of terror and death, the author lands us in the warmest, safest spot of that frightening era – the London Underground. Whole communities built up in these areas, full of people doing their best to carry on through a grim situation. Our characters make a lovely, close-knit extended family out of those who share the space with them. Especially charming are the Ridley sisters, Irene and Dorothy, who play pivotal roles in helping Sophie break free of her sadistic employer and build a new life. The elderly sisters also set up a school for the children whose buildings have been bombed and who need a new place to learn. Mrs. Ottley, Juliet’s landlady, plays the role of the warm, caring mother all of us wish we had, and young Meg, a lonely little girl who must brave the blitz by herself while her father works, is the perfect child who makes all their efforts at education and encouraging reading worthwhile. These secondary characters are richly drawn and make delightful additions to the story.
