This one is by Balogh–we enjoyed it!

Lady Philippa – Pippa – Ware is the eldest child of Earl of Stratton, and unfortunately her marital prospects are nigh on to nill thanks to a family scandal. Her brother chose to expose their father’s extramarital affair in public, and this has shrouded the entire family in scandal. It takes Pippa years to agree to have a season, but when she gets to London, she soon finds herself in the sights of an impossible man.

Lucas Arden, Marquess of Roath, is under the gun in a different way. His grandfather, The Duke of Wilby, believes he’s dying and he wants his bachelor heir to get to marrying and popping out kids ASAP. He thinks Pippa would be perfect for Lucas, but Lucas and Pippa are at odds because she heard him make a cruel remark about her virtue. She approaches him at a ball and asks him if he remembers her. He does, and he knows very well why he said what he said and why he cannot marry her. Cue matchmaking relatives trying to prove to Lucas and Pippa that their love is worth fighting for.

There are lots of twists and turns in The Lady Has a Past, and just when you think you know what’s going on, Ms. Quick throws another fact or character into the action. Usually this would bother me – I like a mystery without last minute surprises – but I think the quick turns in this book were part of its charm. It was like watching an old Hollywood movie from the 1930s where new information or a new villain walks onto the stage every few scenes. It keeps you guessing to the last page.

Here’s an early NA read. Readers love it–we liked it! 

To be completely honest, it was Cam who kept me reading. He was wonderful. Once we got more into their growing relationship, I just couldn’t put this book down. He just sneaks up on her, pushing himself into her life with remarkable ease. He’s friendly and interesting, and has (according to him) the best ideas. But he isn’t perfect, which makes him even better. He has some anger issues that he deals with rather well, but are still there. He has a past he isn’t proud of (for good reason) that he has to really work on opening up to Avery about. Which makes it all the more heartbreaking when Avery can’t open up to him. He has wonderful parents, including a ridiculous father from whom he gets his sense of humor. All in all, I adored him. And once their relationship got going, they were almost too sweet – a bit of a sugar overload – but it works. And seeing Avery’s relief at finally being attracted to someone was wonderful. With her past, she didn’t think that was ever going to be a part of her life, and it was great that she was able to prove herself wrong. Avery and Cam definitely have their bumps, though, and in the end the story is more about Avery letting go of the past so that she can have a future with Cam. And it’s adorable.
