The author has a lyrical, elegant style of writing which lends itself to a deceptively languorous, mellow momentum, allowing for contemplation amidst a lot of action. The story’s seemingly leisurely pace is a soothing foil for the great deal that is actually happening – from the war, to a murder amidst political intrigue, to the exodus of the gods, to the primary romance and the secondary, overarching love story surrounding it, along with the personal trials of Lian and Shao’s families and the dangers of the march. The author, focusing the attention completely on her characters, emphasizes the underlying theme that each large event is really about the people that take part in it. This focus on the players over the thrilling plot is what gives the novel a gentle, thoughtful feel rather than the typical frantic measure that a story this fast moving generally evokes.

The Library of Legends is a lovely look at ancient legends and the wonderful power of mythology as well as a celebration of a country with a rich and fascinating history.  I would recommend it to anyone looking for a beautifully written, contemplative read.

We gave this a B–it’s a funny entertaining story. Our reviewer wrote:

The story is funny and sweet. It lacks unnecessary melodrama, and Cordelia and Daniel (for the most part) are mature and handle the situation well. They are intelligent, likable characters, and really seem to care for each other. Their struggle with the lies and difficulties that surround the relationship is bittersweet, though (as the reader knows) unnecessary….

Secrets of a Proper Lady is the third in a series by Victoria Alexander. There is little mention beyond the prologue of the previous books, which means that not only is it a strong contribution to a series, it is also a strong stand-alone read.

Love Lisa Marie Rice? This is her first novel under a different pen name. We thought it was pretty thrilling. You can read our B review here. We wrote:

It’s no big secret that Elizabeth Jennings is Lisa Marie Rice. Pursuit is her first book under this pen name and it’s a good one – a very good one. As good as it is, though, it falls short when it comes to the book’s hero, Matt Sanders….

Pursuit is a good read, but its lack of character development for Matt kept it from being a great one. Even so, the book still has a fast plot – and the rest of the characters are great. There are hints that Tom Reich, a character we meet late in the book, may show up in another story. I will be sure to read it. In the end, this is still a fast and enjoyable romantic suspense, and I was able to overlook my small problems with it.

We love Carla Kelly–we gave this historical romance a B+. We wrote:

One of my favorite aspects of this book is the history of the War of 1812 as related by an American on British soil. The Brits in Grace’s village all believe that “once an Englishman, always an Englishman” and don’t understand why the Americans have such a problem with impressment. Rob’s explanations go a long way toward changing their opinions. Rob’s search for any news of his home fills the reader with urgency, and his anguish when he reads about Washington D.C. burning is palpable.

Another thing I loved was how Rob’s American thinking affected those around him. He treats everyone the same – gentry or common-folk – and expects to be treated with respect in return. To Grace, who has experienced both ends of the social spectrum, Rob’s attitude is a revelation. Grace’s conversion to the American way of thinking is delightful to read.

Apparently, Carla Kelly is unable to write a bad regency romance. Thank goodness.

We love this series–you can get all three books for just 3.99! Such a deal. In our DIK review of book one, we wrote:

A Promise of Fire is ultimately about politics, civil war, and a woman with the most extraordinary magical ability – to be able to absorb, and then use, other people’s (and, occasionally, objects’) magic. And if that weren’t enough, she can actually feel lies. As in they cause her actual pain and discomfort. It’s a fairly quiet ability, but has so much potential. At it’s heart, it is a “chosen one” story – every 200 years a chosen one is born, blah blah blah – but our heroine, Catalia Fisa, also known as Cat, is most assuredly not a Mary Sue. Cat is strong willed past the point of stubborn, secretive for good reason, and completely unable to trust those around her.  And, like with so many characters, it’s her faults that make her both interesting and relatable….

I don’t think I can recommend A Promise of Fire highly enough. If you like fantasy at all, go read it. If you like mythology at all, go read it. If you like alpha heroes, or chosen-one stories, or strong and independent heroines, go read it. Just… just go read it.
