Today’s Steals and Deals at AAR…..

It doesn’t get much more old-skool than this DIK.  (I sure would like to know who wrote this review!)

The Wolf and the Dove kept me enthralled from page one to the very last page. There is no doubt in my mind that when Kathleen Woodiwiss wrote this story, she paved the way for other historical romance authors to explore this genre. I think this is due to her ingenious way of painting her characters vibrantly alive. Perhaps of equal importance is that the poetic twist to her writing soothes the modern world away and holds the reader a willing captive of the past. I was only sixteen when I first read this story, too young for me to know I wanted to write. But later on, when I did begin to write, this book sprang into thought. We all have our hopes and dreams. Mine is to someday equal Ms. Woodiwiss’ ability to paint a story and perhaps to become, like her, a pioneer writer of a different era in time.

Many more Bridgerton books are on sale today. This one is the next in Shonda’s show. About it, we wrote:

When Sophie and Benedict first meet at the masquerade, they set off sparks. Julia Quinn convinced me that they had eyes only for each other, and that they did indeed fall in love at first sight. Their initial meeting seemed pretty magical for this reader. They still had chemistry when they met again two years hence. Benedict was captivated with Sophie-as-mystery-woman, and no other woman ever measured up as a potential wife. Benedict held out for Cinderella. When he doesn’t recognize Sophie, she doesn’t tell him who she really is thinking no good could ever come of it. This, of course, creates problems later.

The rest of the Bridgertons (from the two previous books in this series), Penelope Featherington, and, of course Lady Whistledown, all make appearances. Violet Bridgerton, the matriarch of the family, has quite a major role in the second half of the book, and the way she rescues Sophie and delivers justice to Araminta, the wicked stepmother, is priceless. The confrontation between Violet, Sophie, Araminta, Benedict and Posy, Araminta’s less-well-liked child, were quite possibly my favorite part of the book.

We gave this one a B+.

The set-up of the story is not necessarily original, but Ms. Maxwell has managed to do something incredibly refreshing and new here. We’re all used to reading about damaged heroes who depend on the love of a good woman to help them turn their lives around, but that’s not the story she’s telling. Instead, it’s Leonie who is struggling with her demons, and Roman who helps her find the light at the end of the tunnel. Ms. Maxwell doesn’t just play lip service to the idea of a damaged heroine either. The story takes some incredibly dark turns, and a few parts were hard for me to read, but I’m glad I stuck with it.

This is a fun series! We gave this one a B.

Steal Me is the story of Maggie Walker and Captain Anthony Moretti. Maggie, an aspiring YA romance author, is a waitress at a local diner frequented by the Moretti’s and, unfortunately, she has a habit of spilling coffee or food on Anthony. Could this be a sign of true love??

There are many more here. Enjoy!
