In the world of historical romance, Judith Ivory is a stand-out. I can think of few writers who can handle Victorian and Edwardian settings as well as she can. Lots of writers are called unique, but Judith Ivory truly deserves that title.

This angsty read by Burrowes got a DIK from us.
Burrowes has a way of writing that allows the reader into the head(s) of her characters in a very personal way. I really loved, loved, loved both the hero and the heroine in this book. The suffering they endured was authentic and never seemed contrived. This reader could feel Christian’s torment both during and after his torture and my empathy that flowed from that was natural (rather than contrived). The hero’s relationship with his daughter was both poignant and uplifting at the same time, and her reaction to her abandonment first by her father and then by her mother was heartbreaking. Many times, child characters in novels are superfluous to the plot of a book, but Lucy was an integral part of Christian and Gilly’s story and I found myself rooting for her HEA as well.

This one has infidelity in it but the cheated against is awful so our reviewer wasn’t overly bothered by it. In her review, she wrote:
It’s only fair to tell you right off the bat that adulterous sex plays an integral role in this novel, so if you’re a reader who can’t get past that, your best bet is to give Irresistible a pass. But if the morality aspect doesn’t bother you too much (the cuckolded husband is a jerk and the wife feels really, really bad) there are quite a few pleasures to be had in this almost retro-style book.

I am exuberant about this book–it’s Reid’s best if you ask me. (The TV mini-series is even better which is really saying something.) In our DIK review, we wrote:
This is a solidly original story with a surprising amount of depth of both plot and character. It’s the kind of thing I want everyone to read and embrace.
