I was charmed by Book People from the outset! Enemies to lovers and opposites attract tropes blend well together and that’s what we have here for Kate and Sebastian. I loved the idea of two bookstores that cater to different customers collaborating together to ensure the survival of both, and the sexy romance between Kate and Sebastian unfolds at a brisk pace once they admit their attraction to each other.

The romance between the principal characters is wonderfully realized and the premise of the series is strangely fascinating/ugly. And although I like the idea of the overarching storyline, readers deserved a bit more secondary character and backstory development. But I will be back for more, and I’m looking forward reading each of the siblings’ stories.

Jacob Astor Addison is the American equivalent of nobility, hailing from ‘old money’. He is in London on business, and visiting with friends from other books, when he encounters Cleo in a costume shop he was planning to purchase. Cleo, thinking to rescue the proprietress from what she believes is an unfair deal, makes her own offer for the shop, and in short order Cleo and Jake are facing off against each other. While the first round goes to Cleo, Jake is clearly struck by her and determined to follow up.

This is an easy and fun read too.
The early eighteenth century setting allows the author to explore some of the political and social issues of the time; the continuing support for “the King over the Water”; the disrespect shown to Scottish MPs in parliament (of which Hugh was one); the problems Hugh encounters in persuading his tenants to adopt more modern farming methods – and I always appreciate that in an historical romance. It doesn’t have to be a history lesson; I just like to feel that the word “historical” is justified.
