We adored this one–Val is such a fascinating lead. I honestly didn’t think Hoyt could pull off making him a hero but, damn, she absolutely did.
Hoyt takes two broken people, one goodness and light and the other darkness and despair and somehow creates almost a new persona that is Val and Bridget combined into one entity separate from their individual selves. Theirs becomes a symbiotic relationship where one cannot exist wholly without the other. Val names Bridget ‘Seraphine’, his avenging angel, in order to mock her but she becomes his angel in truth. It really is just delicious watching her work miracles with this badly damaged hero.

This was the first book by Black I read and I loved it. Our reviewer gave it a B+.
All in all, this is a strong paranormal/fantasy read with fantastic world building, a variety of relationship types and issues, and a nice touch of traditional fairy lore thrown in for good measure.

If you’ve not read this one, I’ll just say it’s my favorite of the series. (I vastly prefer the book to the show for these lovers.) In our review we said:
Julia Quinn is one of those writers who makes it all seem so easy. Her dialogue sings, her characters are devastatingly real, her love scenes sweet and romantic. But writing that reads this effortlessly takes a great deal of effort and a great deal of skill. And while I don’t usually compare one writer to another, in my mind her dialogue sometimes evokes – gasp at the sacrilege! – Georgette Heyer at her best.

Our reviewer had the very highest praise for this contemporary romance.
While Beautiful Mistake is exactly what you might assume – a fun, sexy, entertaining, and heartfelt romance – it is also a beautiful, complex and layered story that is truly original. This book has it all, and I look forward to re-reading and taking the journey again. If I ever do find myself on a deserted island with only books as my companions, I believe I will be just fine if I am surrounded by books like this one.

No, this isn’t a romance. But it is a book I’ve been wanting to read for quite some time and this is the first I’ve seen it on sale. Those I know who’ve read it say it’s readable, fascinating, and an excellent history of the American civil rights movement.
