We could not put It’s One of Us down.

It’s One of Us is J.T. Ellison at her very best. A twisty-turny domestic thriller that examines the many ways to have a baby, and the devastation that occurs when you find the process is far more complex than expected.

Her morning starts with blood. Olivia Bender had not been expecting to flush this particular pregnancy down the toilet, but she has done that with so many others that it isn’t exactly a shock. What is a surprise is having to entertain the police over breakfast almost immediately afterward.

A DNA test has led the cops to her door. Turns out her husband Park has a son. A son who has murdered a woman in an eerily similar fashion to how Park’s college ex met her demise. The police are naturally inquisitive, and Olivia is naturally very confused. Fertility treatments, IVF, a pure diet, and dang near every other thing she has done have not resulted in her having a baby. She has been with Park through most of his teen and adult life. How, then, does her husband have a son she knows nothing about?

…. It’s One of Us is by no means a perfect thriller, but it is an incredibly good one. If you like domestic noir, you should definitely give this a try.

We loved The Gunkle.

Call him “Uncle Mame.” Former sitcom actor Patrick – who worked under the pseudonym Jack Curtis –  is hosting his niece and nephew, food fussy nine-year-old Maisey and lisping six-year-old Grant, on a long vacation in the wake of their mother’s tragic death from a long illness. His attempt at teaching them about the right angles at which to take a selfie and the importance of the movie Grease are interrupted when the kids’ father, Greg, calls and begs Patrick to take the kids for ninety more days while he gets clean of his pill addiction in rehab.  Patrick’s been living the life of a single man for a very long time, and his brother’s request feels like a total impossibility.

Nevertheless, Patrick packs the kids off to his home in Palm Springs.  Loose teeth, toilet trauma (Grant is convinced Patrick’s is haunted) and a manipulative agent soon intervene.  Being around his young niece and nephew forces Patrick to confront how lonely his life has been ever since the love of his life, Joe, died in a car wreck years before.  A career revival, the return of Greg, and the possibility of new love all complicate Patrick’s life, and to his surprise, he becomes even more fond of his niece and nephew over time.

Many AAR readers love a good category romance. This one’s on sale!

Ryder’s Wife is the first book in The Justice Way series and all I can say is that I’m impressed. This book had a little bit of everything in it and I really enjoyed it.

Casey Ruban comes from money, and she’s been raised by her grandfather as his sole heir. She’s paid her dues and now that her grandfather has died, she expects to inherit his company and his wealth. There’s only one problem, – grandfather always wanted her to marry the family lawyer, but she just can’t, no matter the circumstances. That’s why she’s so shocked at the reading of the will to find that her grandfather, as his last request, has demanded she marry within 48 hours or she forfeits everything. Of course, everybody expects that she’ll cave in and finally marry lawyer Lash Marlow. Instead, defiant to the end, Casey walks out, alone, on a mission to find a man within the next 48 hours so she doesn’t lose everything.

Ryder Justice is a man who’s in pain. He owns a successful flying company and is himself a pilot by trade. Unfortunately, he blames himself for the death of his own father and that’s why he’s drifting across country, alone. He cannot accept that he was the impetus to his father’s death, and now he’s a vagabond searching for a place to hole up.

He’s sitting in a local watering hole, having a beer, when Casey walks in. She announces that she’ll marry the first man who’s willing, as long as he’ll stay with her for one year. She’s even willing to give the man full bedroom rights, as long as he’ll come along right now and give her his name. Nobody in the bar is willing to do it, except that tall, good looking stranger sitting at a table all alone. Taking Ryder by the hand, she marries him in the middle of the night, and brings him home to be the family chauffeur. This is how Ryder Justice gets himself a rich wife.

This snappy 2023 contemp is on sale! We loved it.

One part 9 to 5, one part romantic comedy, You Should Smile More is a funny, delightful romp about sweet revenge and even sweeter friendship.

Cat-loving Vanessa Blair is tired of being judged both for her outward appearance and her presumptive demeanor. Yes, the book’s titular phrase is often spoken to her even at her telemarketing job, where it ought not matter to anyone. She has a degree in linguistics, but majoring in Latin means that jobs are thinner on the ground than they ought to be. But Vanessa has dreams that reach beyond the switchboard. Until she achieves them, though, she needs to keep answering phones to keep kibble in her foster kittens’ mouths.

All of those dreams are shattered when she’s called in for a meeting with HR by the new and loathsome boss Xavier Adams. He can’t stand Vanessa’s dour looks and fires her on the spot, even though she’s incredibly competent at her job.

Vanessa’s friends Jane Delaney (recently fired by Xavier for similarly facile reasons) and Trisha Lam (whose job is on very shaky ground) rally around her. Though Vanessa wants to get on with her life, Xavier indicates that he’s going to block her attempt to qualify for unemployment benefits due to her reaction to her firing. Trisha has read The Art of War by Sun Tzu and all three women vow to use the ideas in the tome to take Xavier down. But is revenge really what Vanessa wants, given the possibility of her dream job – and a date with her hunky, cat-adoring unemployment rep – on the horizon?
