If you’ve read even one book in this series then you know how badly Camille deserves a happy ending, and the author happily offers it up without ignoring the impact her traumatic marriage has had on Camille sexually, emotionally, physically and spiritually. I was stunned when St. George admits to the fact that she hadn’t planned on telling Camille’s story in her auhor’s note! But I’m so glad she did.
Jacob is wonderful; gentle and patient, in spite of his insistence that nooo he will never fall in love, just never! The romance between him and Camille burns slowly and carefully. He realizes that sex won’t fix Camille’s anxiety and her fear of men, and is patient with his support and affection.
Not that the sex in the story is weak; nah, it’s as bold and lovely as the rest of the novel. This is a beautiful romance and a story about two people discovering themselves and learning how to appreciate true love. The Duchess Takes a Husband is gorgeous and just the right kind of early summer pick-me-up.

In some ways, this book reads like a rich, multilayered fantasy. In others, it’s very like a romantic thriller. Either way, it’s an intriguing debut and I’m glad I read it. If you’re in the mood for romance and dark fantasy, this might be just the book for you. Even with the rough patches, there’s an intriguing world awaiting discovery here, and I’ll be coming back for the sequel.

This historical fiction is one of reviewer Maggie’s favorite books. In her A review, she wrote:
The Last Train to London is a story about the cost of both complicity and courage. The complicity we see in Austria, as people vote to incorporate into Germany and turn to violence and theft against their Jewish neighbors; the complicity of America as it turns away desperate Jewish refugees, even after the horrific events of kristallnacht ; and the complicity of European governments as they watch the terrible, violence-fueled rise of Hitler but refuse to stir themselves to action. That collusion costs millions of lives, making a long, bitter war inevitable but it is matched in small part by the courage of women like Truus, who rescues children at great risk to herself; Kathe Perger, who writes and publishes the truth about events in Germany and Austria in her newspaper even as the Nazis threaten her with arrest, destroy her publication’s office and threaten her family; and Helen Bentwich who goes to battle with the British government to find a place for children in critical need.
