Innocence Undone is precisely the type of romance I enjoy reading when I’ve read several bad books in a row. Not just because it’s a good read, although it certainly is. But because it features a traditional premise, albeit with some unique twists. And a nice, traditional story-line is always welcome; it brings me back to the start of my love affair with the genre, and reminds me of what is good about it.
Of course, romances would be boring if they were too traditional, so Kat Martin has tweaked things nicely. Instead of a heroine who is just a beautiful, tomboyish hoyden, this heroine is also the daughter of a whore. Instead of a hero who is just a hunk of a naval officer, this hero also has feelings. Whenever a hero has the ability to cry, he becomes more attractive to me, and I automatically hold the author in higher esteem.

Maggie loved this one by Kristan Higgins, an author beloved at AAR.
This book certainly deals with a deeply emotional issue – the death of a spouse. It would be easy for such a novel to be a complete tearjerker, but that isn’t the case here. It’s sweet, funny, and optimistic without ever minimizing the pain of Josh’s loss. I cried – but I laughed a lot, too.

Cordelia “Posey” Osterhagen is the adopted daughter of two German restaurateurs in a small New England town. She has an older brother, Henry, also adopted, and a cousin, Gretchen, who is the daughter of her mother’s identical twin sister, and all these other wonderful, different people in her life. As a teen, she had a major crush on Liam Murphy, the Bad Boy who moved to town after getting out of juvey. But Liam never really noticed Posey, even though he worked at her parents’ restaurant. First he slept his way through the easy girls, then fell hard for a new, good girl. He followed Emma off to college where she got pregnant, and they got married. Two years before the story starts in current time, Emma died from cancer, and now Liam is back in town with his teen-aged daughter to live near Emma’s parents.
Higgins shows us in so many ways how Liam’s personality developed and changed over the 20 or so years the story covers. He gave up his bad-boy ways when he met Emma, and he loves his daughter Nicole as fiercely as any dad can. Over time, he has developed OCD tendencies that were exacerbated by a serious motorcycle accident shortly after Emma died. All his thoughts seem to focus on the worst possible scenarios – being in an elevator means the elevator will plunge him to his death, leaving Nicole an orphan. Even though his business is motorcycles, he won’t ride one anymore. He checks and rechecks locks; he methodically and compulsively counts the seconds of hand washing; he’s a mess, even though his outer appearance is still motorcycle bad boy. He is incredibly overprotective of Nicole because he remembers what he and Emma got away with as teens.

Readers keep coming back to Penny Reid’s sexy, funny contemps and this one is on sale! We loved it!
Along with a first-rate romance, Totally Folked also gives us a creative, sweet story. Ms. Reid does the perfect job putting the reader right into Rae’s and Jackson’s minds and taking us along for the romantic ride. This story has less drama than some of the more recent Penny Reid books and I appreciated the gentler nature of this romance. Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of action and loads of steam, but the story is focused more on Jackson and Rae and their development as individuals and as a couple than on an exciting side story.
