Today’s Steals and Deals at AAR…..
This really is one of the best historical romances written in the past several years. (My rave review is here.) When historical fiction soars, it teaches AND entertains. (My love of historical fiction that depresses the sh*t out of me is at an all time low.) The history behind this book–England’s laws of coverture (the US had the same laws until the early 20th century) stated a woman didn’t legally exist–is infuriating. AND the story–and the romance–is uplifting. I loved it.

This is a winner as well. In another rave review, our reviewer wrote: There is a large supporting cast of secondary characters and subplots, which in the hands of a lesser author would quickly get out of hand. In addition to the action and suspense, Brockmann manages to tell not one but two complete love stories, while at the same time seamlessly interweaving a third, tragic, story of Tom’s grand-uncle’s World War II service told through flashbacks. This story brought me to tears on more than one occasion. Somehow, all of these stories mesh beautifully and all become integral to catching the terrorist and preventing the bombing.

I don’t watch any baking shows and I still enjoy this series. We gave Hot Under Pressure a B+, Too Hot to Touch an A-, and weren’t as wild about Some Like It Hot. Still, I think they’re all a very good time.

Have we discussed my love of this book before? It is one of my two faves by the excellent Laura Lee Guhrke. In our DIK review, we wrote:
The strength of this book is in the characters. I fell in love with Phillip reading this story. Ms. Guhrke does a wonderful job of slowly revealing his feelings, deepening his character, and revealing the truth behind his motivations and feelings. He feels very much bound by society’s dictates and a gentleman’s honor, so he says and does things that seem priggish or hardheaded, but his struggles also make him incredibly real and sympathetic. My favorite parts of the story were the time the author spends in his head. However, his initial reaction to Maria – that she is set on seducing his brother into marriage – is never fully reconciled with his character later on, nor is it ever resolved, fading instead into the background.
Maria, too, is a great character. She has a strong sense of self and a lot of determination and, though she is a bit stubborn at times, her hesitations are understandable. I thought her epiphany at the end was wonderful.
The interaction between Maria and Phillip is wonderful, their chemistry strong. Tension and emotion are both very real with them. There are some powerful moments and conversations between them, one incredibly reminiscent of my favorite scene from Pride and Prejudice.

I very much enjoyed this series. All three books can be read as standalones–the heroes all know each other–and this one as well as the one by Maisey Yates is HOT. If you’re looking for a very sexy, bit darker contemporary romance, this one fits the bill.
