Today’s Steals and Deals at AAR…..

This is a very good historical. We docked it for some typos and historically inaccurate language, but the story is a fine one.

Robert is the strongest character in England’s Perfect Hero and a fine example of a tortured hero. Kept in a prison wherein English officers were tortured and interrogated, if they broke and gave information they were released as traitors. If they withstood the torture, they were killed. Robert would not talk. He was shot and tossed out of the prison, all but dead. When word gets out, and papers go missing, Robert is the suspect: after all, he survived and only traitors survived.

Lucinda is not quite as strong a character, but she is very likeable. She’s forthright and sensible, not at all prone to do silly things, and she’s very kind. Her calm presence is just what Robert needs. There really isn’t anything to mark her as a memorable heroine, but she isn’t foolish or dumb. She’s nice.

The secondary characters, especially Robert’s family and Lucinda’s friends, are an excellent cast. They are individuals and play a good supporting role while not overpowering the main story. I haven’t read the earlier books in this series, but I had no problem following the story in this one.

This is a stellar read.

If you love books that really focus in on family dynamics, Truths I Never Told You will be right up your alley. The story is about Beth first and foremost, but her family relationships make up a huge part of her everyday life. It’s clear these characters love each other deeply, and although mistakes are made in their dealings with one another, that love shines through, evoking a feeling of overall rightness as I read. Families are complex and messy, and Ms. Rimmer captures all of this perfectly, making this a book I’m thrilled to recommend.

It’s a good day for old historical romance today. We gave this one a B+.

Lady Victoria Fontaine is better known as Vixen, and with good reason. She flaunts her flirtatious behavior in the face of the disapproving faces of the ton, keeping her throng of suitors enamored. More and more, though she is realizing that all this flirting has become quite boring. It all comes to an end the night she meets Sinclair Grafton, the Marquess of Althorpe (better known as Sin) who is home to find out who murdered his brother, Thomas.

When Sinclair and Victoria are caught in a passionate kiss at a party, her enraged father vows they will marry. Although neither of them are meek enough to accept orders, nevertheless the marriage takes place before all of Society. They both have reasons for the marriage; Victoria is intrigued by the one man she can’t boss about like a puppy, and Sinclair needs Victoria as his wife in order to be accepted in Society so he can sleuth and and find his brother’s killer. It also doesn’t hurt that they are deeply attracted to each other.

When Reena’s village falls into the hands of a brutal landlord, she seeks the help of a warrior known only as The Legend. She should have been afraid after all the stories she’s heard at her father’s knees, but from the moment she meets him, it is not fear she feels but fierce passion. Magnus has never known a lass brave enough to look him in the eye, let alone one who would plead for his help. Yet here was a sweet–spirited woman who inspires a deep yearning within him. He is willing to save her people, for a price. But once Reena uncovers his secrets, will she regret making a bargain with the devil, or find a sinful passion in his arms?
