How much world-building can you cram into the pages of one short novella? Well, the answer here is w-a-a-a-y too much – so much, in fact, that my brow remained pretty much completely furrowed as I attempted to make my way through this one. Though I didn’t read Demon Angel, it’s clear that this novella featuring guardian Selah and vampire Lucas takes place in the same world. To be honest, I won’t even attempt to describe the plot because it just didn’t feel like there was that much of it, so intent was the author on filling in the reader on every single detail of her very complicated mythology. I just didn’t care about all those rules, frankly, after about ten pages of it and was simply never engaged in either the story or the characters. Ms. Brook has a pleasing prose style, but she desperately needs some serious attention from an editor.
