Dabney’s Holiday Gift Giving Guide 2019

It’s that time of year again. Whether you’re trying to find the perfect item for the office holiday party gift exchange (I recommend this.) or you’re overwhelmed with our world of too many choices, shopping for gifts can be stressful. […]

To cover or not to cover

174Price tags on books, that is. I understand it’s supposed to be in very bad taste to let the recipient of a gift know how much has been paid for it. Whenever I buy a book and ask the salesperson to wrap the book up for me, they cover the price with a sticker. I know these stickers well: They are hell to remove afterwards. So I usually ask the salesperson not to use a sticker, and have received many a strange look. […]

"The greatest gift is a portion of thyself." Ralph Waldo Emerson

No matter what holiday you celebrate around this time of year a large portion of your time is spent thinking about gifts. For many of us it is stressful, especially buying gifts for friends, and co-workers. How much to spend? What to buy? And to whom are you giving a present? Before you bake or buy that tin of cookies or that box of specialty hot chocolate, think about giving something that is truly meaningful – your time. […]

To bring a gift … or not?

Do you always bring a gift when you are invited to someone’s house? I mostly do, but not always, and I am increasingly irritated by the custom. I wish there were clearer rules! […]

Commencement

commencement1It’s that time of the year again, when high schools and universities all around the country begin pouring out young, hopeful graduates ready to take on the world or try their hand at college.  Last night I donned my own gown and hood to participate in graduation ceremonies for the high school where I teach.  As kids that I’ve spent the last four years with marched across the stage and received their diplomas to great fanfare, I realized I’d been remiss – I haven’t given my own graduation gifts as of yet.

I could go the easy route and give cash or gift cards, which is probably what they’d rather have anyway.  Or, I could spend more time and thought and give a gift far more meaningful.  Any suggestions or tried and true gift ideas out there?
