It Takes a Psychic

The dust bunnies are back for more action and mayhem in the latest addition of Jayne Castle’s Harmony series. I enjoyed being back in this world and am happy to report that the story has plenty of suspense – especially in the second half. I would love to see a little more romance, but there was enough to keep me immersed in the story.

It Takes a Psychic continues where People in Glass Houses left off. In People in Glass Houses, Molly and her boyfriend Joshua, rescued Leona and her crew after they were kidnapped on an expedition exploring alien antiquities in underground tunnels. I do think it helps to read People in Glass Houses first to get more of Leona’s backstory – the two books are closely connected.

Leona is a para-archeologist whose psychic talent helps her to authenticate old relics. She is asked by the university where she works, to attend a reception to determine if the artifacts on display are authentic. She is surprised when she sees Pandora’s Box, a powerful relic. While at the event, she meets Oliver, a man with strong psychic talents and the director of a small museum that deals with the study of atypical phenomena. Together they stumble on a murder and, when the police show up to raid the reception for stolen artifacts, Oliver helps Leona escape along with Roxy, an adorable dust bunny. Leona is surprised to see Oliver has also brought Pandora’s Box with them.

Oliver is working with authorities on a case and he needs Leona’s help. He asks her to go to Lost Creek with him, to search for a vortex machine that is believed to enhance people’s psychic talents. Leona wants to find out if the vortex was used on her birth mother when she was pregnant with her. It could explain Leona’s special psychic talents. Oliver and Leona go off together to investigate and Pandora’s Box becomes vital to their work. Lost Creek is a town that believes in a legend involving a lost bride with a key – and they think Leona is the lost bride! It gets very exciting.

I wanted to know a little more about Oliver, his family and his work and I would have liked to see more of Leona and Oliver after they became a couple. I did like his special talent of being able to blend into his surroundings so no one noticed him (except of course Leona did) and when they kissed, Leona felt as if she had touched a blazing hot artifact. I thought it was really funny when both Leona and the villain are reading the same self-help book! I loved all of the action and suspense in the story and as always, the dust bunnies were a hoot!

The author describes the Harmony world at the beginning of the book which I found helpful and I think readers new to the series will appreciate it too. I enjoy Castle’s novels because I can count on them to have romance with humor and suspense and It Takes a Psychic has all that and more.

Kayne Spooner is an avid reader of all genres, but it's romance books that have always swept her off her feet. Kayne gravitates toward stories with humor and furry sidekicks, although really, if there's a happy ever after, she's here for it!

I really appreciate this series. Likable characters, a real plot, humor, dust bunnies—when you’re having a day (or more) when all you really want to do is crawl under the covers and suck your thumb, this is the ideal distraction.

I loved her Amanda Quick books and her Stephanie James books under Silhouette. They were my entry into romance reading.
