I loved this book. The characterization was great. The secondary characters had personality and spunk and help propel the story between Libby and Michael along. Most of the characters from the other two books make an appearance in this book, but they do not take over. You see just enough of them to help tell the story. Although the plot was somewhat predictable, it also surprised me in certain places. And the setting was so well rendered that while reading, I felt I was in Maine, in the snow.

This book stayed with me even when I had to put it down. It can challenge the reader and make her think, which is a quality I greatly enjoy in a book. Barefoot in the Rain is just short of being a DIK, but it came damn close. I have to admire Ms. St. Claire for taking risks with this novel. They paid off.

Many romance readers happily own a whole mess of historical romances by Balogh. She’s consistently very very good. We gave this one a B+.
Outside of the sweet romance, there is a lot of careful exploration of the importance of social status, and what that means to both characters. Ben has to struggle to figure out who he is within the scheme of his own family, while Jenny has to claim her independence and individuality. Both stories are quite compelling.

Race Spencer comes across a slaughter in an arroyo while he’s out on a cattle drive. It’s not cattle that have been slaughtered, but people. From their possessions and clothing, Race deduces they were a religious group known as “cheek turners.” Unexpectedly, he finds someone still alive and takes her back to camp with him. The survivor is Rebecca Ann Morgan, a beautiful young woman. Race nurses her back to health and she comes to depend on him as they fall in love.
I have to say that Race is one of the sweetest, gentlest heroes I’ve ever read. He can’t read or write, but he’s loaded with common sense and insight – thanks to a tough childhood and a mixed heritage. He is so caring and patient toward Rebecca that’s it’s wonderful to watch.
