Today’s Steals and Deals at AAR…..

Our reviewer Maggie gave this recent historical fiction release a B+. She wrote that it’s a worthwhile, challenging read.

Ms. Martin does an outstanding job of capturing just what it means when tyrants are in charge and how that actually looks for the folks suffering under their rule. It has the added benefit of highlighting just how much courage and perseverance it took for those who did resist.

That said, the author’s talent for making the reader really feel the cost of the occupation makes The Keeper of Hidden Books a tough story to enjoy. It’s a novel I’m glad to have read, and one that serves as a reminder of important history, but it wasn’t joyous or fun to read. I would recommend it to everyone, but I would also recommend choosing a moment when you’re ready to experience some angst and heartache.

This contemporary romance deals with some serious stuff AND is also a light romance. You can read more about it in our review here. Maggie wrote:

There’s a bit less sex but I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys authors like Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Rachel Gibson, Alexis Daria, and Tessa Bailey and who doesn’t mind the lower heat level.

Love Johanna Lindsey? Here’s a Western for you! In our review, our reviewer wrote:

…. once I plowed through the first 20% of the book that just seemed a little cutesy and contrived, the entire tone of the book changed and I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the story. Though the courtship period between Tiffany/Jennifer and Hunter only lasts a couple of weeks, the relationship between them does not feel rushed. Hunter is a very likeable character and even though he is portrayed as a big flirt, he is not shown to be sexually promiscuous. However his character was somewhat underdeveloped compared to Tiffany’s and there is very little discernible growth in Hunter during the course of the book. Tiffany begins her journey as the spoiled “only child” (even though she has 3 brothers she rarely sees in Montana) of her single mother for the last 15 years. She is steeped in propriety and her ability to unwind in the still untamed west takes place at a realistic pace. The insight she gains as a servant also serves to mature her character.

Kinsella’s books are almost always a marvelous escape. In our review of this one, our reviewer wrote:

Picking and choosing chick lit stories by the back cover results in my sporadic reading of this genre. I have to admit that Sophie Kinsella dropped off my radar because of the Shopaholic books – I didn’t want to read about buying posh things when I was on a budget. But with her latest single title she is definitely back on it. With superb sparkle and wit, the book entertained me from beginning to end.

Poppy Wyatt is the luckiest girl alive – well, she used to be the luckiest. Oh, she is still engaged to the most wonderful man in the world and they are still getting married. And it is not like she has been in an earthquake or nuclear disaster, or the victim of a crazed gunman. She only just lost her fiancé’s ring – a ring that has been in the family for three generations – on the day that her future in-laws are coming back to town. At one of her bachelorette parties she surrendered to her girlfriends’ pleas and forked over her ring so they could try it on. But she gets distracted during a raffle draw, and she never dreamed that the fire alarm would go off, sending everyone into the street. Going from person to person, Poppy is distraught to discover no one has her ring. And if that is not bad enough, her cell phone is stolen.
