Today’s Steals and Deals at AAR…..

Happy Monday! We’ve begun running our Best of 2023 lists at AAR–if you’re wondering what you should have read this past year, we have ideas!

It’s the first week of the month, so there are lots of Steals and Deals out. Enjoy!

This classic Roberts got a DIK from us.

Roberts hit one out of the ballpark with Three Fates. I was going to give it a B+, but weeks after I finished it, I’m stilling raving and recommending it left and right. Perhaps my expectations were lower since I haven’t read or enjoyed many of Roberts’ hardback offerings, and this one just surprised me. But I don’t think so. I think the great writing, sense of adventure and great characters sold themselves. And on an interesting note, the next book I’ve picked up for review has a mythological aspect to it, and guess who shows up in the first chapter? Yep, the three fates. So I even managed to learn something from this book. All in all, a definite winner.

King Hall by Scarlett Hall

I love the description our reviewer gave of this DIK romance.

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, did you ever wonder what life would have been like for the characters as adults? If so, King Hall is the book for you. Scarlett Dawn has kicked off what promises to be a fabulous new series that reminded me a bit of Harry Potter, but is definitely intended for an adult audience….

King Hall introduces us to a wonderful cast of characters. I can’t wait to see if the plans they make will come to fruition. I loved Ms. Dawn’s ability to take today’s world and add a mystical element to it. The revolution that begins with the killing of Lily’s mate and the discord between Mysticals and Commoners add action and depth, making this more than an average coming-of-age novel set in a world slightly different from our own.

This YA romance is such a winner.

When my teenage student walked into my classroom, slammed a copy of this book on the desk, and announced, in audible capital letters, “THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN,” I knew Anna and the French Kiss was something special. A contemporary story of discovering the world and yourself at the same time, Anna works for readers of any age. If you read young adult, read Anna. If you don’t read young adult, start with Anna. You won’t be sorry.

Anna Oliphant wants to stay at her Georgia high school with her best friend, the cute boy at the Multiplex named Toph, and the familiarity of United States rites of passage like Homecoming and Prom. Her father, however, has other plans: Anna will acquire Culture by spending her senior year in Paris. Anna, who speaks no French and has barely traveled, struggles to fit into this strange new world. Can she make new friends without replacing her best friend back home? Can she make new friends, full stop? Would getting to know Etienne St. Clair, her gorgeous French-American classmate, be a betrayal of the relationship she and Toph never had a chance to begin? Will she ever learn enough French to order something besides bread?

This was Enoch’s first contemp and our reviewer felt she knocked it out of the park.

If you’re pining for a smartly written, over the top romance with bigger than life characters who engage in admittedly improbable antics in order to solve an equally improbable mystery, then Flirting with Danger is a book you won’t want to miss. As for me, considering her fabulous debut, I’ll extend to the author my welcome to the world of contemporaries. I, for one, am darn glad to have you.

We know you love historicals. Here’s a pretty good one!

Set in nineteenth-century Wales, Kate Bateman’s A Reckless Match is an entertaining frenemies-to-lovers romance between scions of two noble families who have been enemies for so many hundreds of years that no-one now alive can remember the reason for that enmity.  The humour and effortless banter between her leads are things I’ve always appreciated about the author’s work, and her ability to create strong chemistry and palpable sexual tension is once again in evidence here, as her two protagonists – Gryffud Davies and Madeleine Montgomery – continue both the family rivalry and the relationship built on verbal sparring and one-upmanship they engaged in as children….

Well-plotted, fast-paced and devoid of over-the-top drama, A Reckless Match is a charming romance full of adventure, sexual tension and great banter, and it gets Kate Bateman’s new Ruthless Rivals series off to a strong start.
