Our reviewer adored this book, and, after reading her DIK review, I’m buying it! 

Maddie Faraday is in a predicament – she’s the town good girl with a spotless reputation. She’s got a supposedly fairy-tale marriage in the eyes of her gossipy neighbors, even though her husband, Brent, is really running around on her like crazy. She’s also got a mother who’s the town expert on any gossip going around. Just when Maddie finds proof of her husband’s infidelity, her old boyfriend, C.L. Sturgis, breezes into the town he left years ago, looking for her husband, and asking a bunch of questions. C.L. was the town bad boy way back when and the town isn’t likely to forgive him. Now that he’s back in town, the neighbours are already hitting the grapevine.

In retrospect, Crusie couldn’t have chosen a better title for her book. Maddie begins to believe that her whole life has been one great, big lie and it’s obvious to her that she’s never really gotten C.L. out of her system. As for C.L., after 20 years, he still has the hots for Maddie, married or not. Maddie wouldn’t mind a little extra-curricular activity with C.L. (especially since her husband is such a cheater), but she does have a reputation to maintain. What if they get caught?….

I loved this book. Crusie has written a tale that will drive you crazy trying to figure out who the killer really is. If you like a good murder mystery with lots of hot spots and lots of funny dialogue, Tell Me Lies is just perfect for you.

I like this series and this is my favorite of the set. I re-read it every few years and it always makes me happy. It’s peak Gibson IMHO–sexy, funny, and moving. (You can read our review here.) Here’s the blurb:

I ADORE this book. It is possibly my favorite by Guhrke–I can never decide between it and Guilty Pleasures. I love the leads–their past and their present–and the way the barriers to the relationship–class, a heroine’s desire to have her own career–are written. And while Penelope and Colin are hot in that carriage, they are nothing compared to Maria and Phillip as they ride through a rainy London night! (I like every book in the series!) In our DIK review, we wrote:

The strength of this book is in the characters. I fell in love with Phillip reading this story. Ms. Guhrke does a wonderful job of slowly revealing his feelings, deepening his character, and revealing the truth behind his motivations and feelings. He feels very much bound by society’s dictates and a gentleman’s honor, so he says and does things that seem priggish or hardheaded, but his struggles also make him incredibly real and sympathetic. My favorite parts of the story were the time the author spends in his head….

Maria, too, is a great character. She has a strong sense of self and a lot of determination and, though she is a bit stubborn at times, her hesitations are understandable. I thought her epiphany at the end was wonderful….

The interaction between Maria and Phillip is wonderful, their chemistry strong. Tension and emotion are both very real with them. There are some powerful moments and conversations between them, one incredibly reminiscent of my favorite scene from Pride and Prejudice.

Authentic-sounding period dialogue is another strength of Ms. Guhrke’s, as are the details of late 19th century life. I liked reading about the technology developed during the mid-to-late 1800s, perhaps because it’s somewhat rare among historicals to be set this late in the Victorian era. And, as an amateur baker, I loved the food details, the descriptions of the pastries and desserts. It made me want to go whip up a batch of cookies or decorate a cake.

This STEM, Beauty and the Beast tale is one of many readers favorites by Quick (who is also Jayne Ann Krentz). In our DIK review, we wrote:

Beauty and the Beast stories are favorites with many readers of romance novels. There is just something about the whole premise that lends itself to romance and resonates with readers in a way that other fairy tale archetypes do not. Ravished is a touching and often funny Beauty and the Beast story set in Regency England. It is many reader’s favorite Amanda Quick novel. I know it is mine.

Harriet Pomeroy is not a typical beauty. She is 25 years old, small, slender and sharp featured. Like all the Amanda Quick heroines, she is unusual. Harriet is wild about paleontology and spends most of her time exploring for fossils in the caves near the village of Upper Biddleton. When she finds evidence that thieves are using the caves to hide their stolen loot, she writes to Gideon, Viscount St. Justin, who manages the estate where the caves are located. Gideon is not a handsome man – he is big and tall with a bad scar on his face caused by a duel. He has a sinister reputation to go along with his sinister appearance. He is suspected to having driven his fiancee to commit suicide and is also suspected of having something to do with the mysterious death of his older brother. As a consequence, Gideon is estranged from his family and Society in general and has lived the past few years very much alone.

When Gideon comes to talk to Harriet about the thieves, she is not at all bothered by his appearance and reputation and immediately begins to tell him all about the caves and the wonderful fossils she has found. Gideon has plans to apprehend the thieves, plans that do not include Harriet. Gideon doesn’t realize that you do not tell an Amanda Quick heroine no. While Gideon is in the cave, he finds himself trapped overnight with Harriet when the tide starts to rise. Of course, since he has compromised her reputation, Gideon proposes and Harriet accepts, much to the horror of some of her friends.

Book four in Toni Anderson’s Cold Justice: Crossfire series, Cold Cruel Kiss is a nail-bitingly tense, superbly plotted romantic suspense novel set in Buenos Aires, which finds Supervisory Special Agent Max Hawthorne of the FBI’s Crisis Negotiation Unit called in after the seventeen-year-old daughter of the US Ambassador to Argentina is kidnapped whilst on a Christmas Eve shopping trip. I’ve read or listened to the other books in this series (and to some of the earlier Cold Justice series) and this is the best yet; it’s clever and perfectly paced with a few good twists and turns and a couple of engaging leads whose romance, while fairly low key, nonetheless hums with chemistry…..

Heart-pounding action, pulsing attraction, spooks, conspiracies, betrayal, political wrangling; Cold Cruel Kiss has it all and Toni Anderson moulds it into a terrific read and one of the best romantic suspense stories I’ve read in a while. Fans of the genre should definitely consider checking it out.
