Author Ann Liang tackles the conflict between the Yue and Wu nations in A Song To Drown Rivers, a retelling of the legend of Xi Shi, who is one of the Four Beauties of Ancient China. Like most legends, there are multiple iterations of the tale, with this book mostly sticking to the basic story line.

Xishi is washing silk at the river when a young girl, begging for mercy, collapses in front of her. A Wu soldier is chasing the child with a drawn sword, clearly planning to kill her. Xishi intervenes and expects to die in her place as a result, but the most beautiful man she has ever seen arrives just in time, saving her life. His name is Fanli. Dressed in silks and clearly of the noble class, he nevertheless claims that he is there to see humbly born Xishi. Whispers of her exquisite loveliness have reached as far as the palace, and he, the emperor’s chief advisor, needs just such a woman. There is a plan for vengeance afoot that requires courage as well as charm. Xishi, who lost a sister to Wu violence, is more than happy to be a part of it.

This is one of my faves by Jewell whose books I routinely love. In our DIK review, we wrote:

The author does an excellent job of getting the reader invested in the characters. I was especially impressed with Laurel. She could have been a woman easy to judge; she had, after all, discarded her living family in favor of her missing daughter. Yet we see how sorry Laurel is for the years she let her grief control her, and we also see how very damaged she is because of what she endured. We admire her tenacity, her unwillingness to let go and we dream of having a champion like that in our own lives.  Laurel is nuanced and relatable.

The crime centers on one of my favorite themes: simple decisions which shouldn’t be wrong but turn out to be. While the villain is villainous, they are not a super villain or complete freak who defies the standards of humanity. A person gone awry, a few choices that aren’t mistakes but that turn out to be calamitous – that is all it takes for a child to disappear. This tragedy could happen to anyone, which makes it more frightening than supervillainy.

Our reviewer found this over the top but readers love it. It’s pretty old-skool, if that’s your jam.

Anthony Maddox is the long-lost Earl of Sutton – lost when his slimy cousin pushed him overboard into a raging river while they were on a safari in Africa. Enter Grace Hawthorne, young companion to the dowager countess, who is charged to bring Anthony up to snuff in secret, for Lady Sutton doesn’t want word of her grandson’s presence to get out until he can be presented. Grace and an old family retainer are the only ones she trusts. Of course, this puts Grace and Anthony in many compromising positions and both are soon head over heels in lust.
