How to celebrate Labor Day

Tag der ArbeitMay 1st is Labor Day in Germany. It’s one of the two non-religious public holidays we have here (the other being Reunification Day, October 3rd), and everyone loves having that day off.

There are marches in some cities, but not in small towns like mine, so everybody in my neighborhood feels free to enjoy the day just as they like.

This is what I had been planning for yesterday:

  • Tidy my study.
  • Put away the winter shoes.
  • Wash some clothes.
  • Do some work in the garden.
  • Clean the top floor of our house.
  • Watch the soccer game Barcelona – Munich.

This is what I ended up doing:

  • Read two books – The Ides of April by Lindsey Davis in the morning, and The Sword Dancer by Jeannie Lin in the afternoon.
  • Clean the top floor of our house.
  • Watch the soccer game Barcelona – Munich.

You can see the day was used for less effectively, but far more enjoyously than I had anticipated. I still feel good about it – after all, the absence of labor is the sweeter when one has work one likes on all the other days.

How do you like to spend Labor Day?
