My five recommended reads for a chilly fall day
Since hubby and I are a writing team, we thought it would be fun to each list two series we read individually, along with one series we both love!
The Just a Little Series (Just a Little Crush, Just a Little Embrace, Just a Little Sincerity, Just a Little Promise, Just a Little Insecurity, Just a Little Surprise, Just a Little Reminder, Just a Little Sequel) was my first introduction to the world of New Adult Romance, and I was immediately hooked. It’s a story about Julie, a high school senior tasked with an assignment that asks her to consider what she wants to do for a living. When it’s obvious she doesn’t have a clue, her police chief uncle suggests she shadow one of his officers, the young, hunky Luke, to see if she wants to pursue a career in law enforcement. While Julie has no desire to become a cop like her uncle, she definitely has a crush on Luke. A mix of romance and suspense, the series is about learning what you’re good and figuring out what you want all while navigating everyday life, which makes for a fun, sometimes emotional, and thoroughly satisfying read.
Then I stumbled on another New Adult Romance called the Imperfect Series (Imperfect Chemistry, Imperfectly Criminal, and Practically Imperfect) and I couldn’t read each of the books fast enough! First, I just have to say that I absolutely love Mary Frame’s voice. Her characters jump off the page with their unique take on the world, witty dialogue, and fresh, fun approach to romance. Each book focuses on a different couple in a college town and their stories will make you wish the characters were actual people so you could hang out with them in real life!
I’ve always been of the firm opinion that every story can be improved by the addition of a zombie or two, but Diana Rowland’s White Trash Zombie Series takes that idea to a whole other level. Angel Crawford is a complete mess. Her life is in one long, continuous downward spiral, and just when it seems things can’t get any worse, she wakes up one morning in a hospital bed only to discover that now she’s a zombie—and she’s really hungry. But a suspicious book with a note on it—and a job at the local ME’s office—is about to change her entire world. With this series, Diana Rowland has created a heroine you can’t help but cheer for, even as Angel goes looking for her next meal. There’s snark, action, drama, romance, and heartbreak all wrapped around the larger story of a woman trying to get ahead in the world (Get a head—see what I did there?).
Jim Butcher is one of those urban fantasy writers that keeps putting out one amazing story after the other, keeping his readers hooked on his Harry Dresden character. Harry is a wizard—the only one listed in the Chicago phone book—who helps people. And with that humble beginning Butcher weaves a complex story of how a simple decision to help a person can snowball into a tidal wave of unforeseen consequences that quickly pulls everyone Harry knows toward places they never imagined going. The world building for this series is lightyears beyond amazing, and the emotional connection Butcher creates between his characters makes the reader worry constantly about what might happen before the next book comes out. I swear I’ve dreamed about kidnapping Butcher and holding him hostage in our basement, so I can force him to write faster. But then I realize that would maybe be a little weird. Besides, we don’t have a basement. But it’s the thought that counts.
(Both Hubby and Me) Monster Haven Series by R.L. Naquin
Monster Haven is a perfect blend of romance and urban fantasy, engaging for fans of both. The heroine, Zoey, doesn’t know it, but she’s an empath. She feels people’s emotions—as in, REALLY feels them. So when a closet monster shows up in her house with a problem, what’s an empath to do? Why, she helps, of course! And thus starts an insane, scary, emotional series that will keep you jumping until the very last page. Hubby and I race to keep up with each other when we read the books, so we can talk about what’s going to happen next (even though hubby hates to guess).
Former Special Forces Lieutenant Jayson Harmon can’t believe that his war scars don’t matter to beautiful feline shifter Layla Halliwell. Why would she saddle herself with a broken man?
But Layla knows that Jayson is a hero to the core, and that only she can heal his wounded soul. So when Jayson is deployed on another deadly mission, no way is Layla staying behind…
