It’s Black History Month in the United States, and AAR is celebrating by revisiting our DIKs by Black authors (of any country) reviewed since last February (to see previous Black History Month posts, visit 2022 and 2021).
Please enjoy!
I'm a history geek and educator, and I've lived in five different countries in North America, Asia, and Europe. In addition to the usual subgenres, I'm partial to YA, Sci-fi/Fantasy, and graphic novels. I love to cook.
I’ve read/reviewed about a third of these and have several others on my TBR. Martin, Williams, Guillory, and Rocchon are probably my only four auto-buy authors. I absolutely love them.
There are many great authors here but I have to add You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi to this list. I’ve mentioned the book elsewhere here at AAR but it deserves mentioning again. I’m still thinking about it several weeks later. It is a May-December, contemporary romance set in NYC and then a Caribbean island. Main character Feyi is a 20-something fine artist, 5 years after the sudden, accidental death of her husband – so it may or may not be for everyone. But it worked for me. I started the book by listening to the audio book (excellent narrator – Bahni Turpin), and then read it off the page when I couldn’t leave it alone.
The Ireland was so interesting. As was the Bryce. So many great authors here!
I know you loved Ireland’s first series. I think I liked this one even better.
I think my favorite is still Dread Nation.
