Amanda had Patent ductus arteriosus in which a blood vessel fails to close normally in an infant soon after birth. No available treatment at the time so Brianna and Roger were forced to go back to present time.

Roger and Brianna’s daughter Amanda had a birth defect – a heart condition caused by a blood vessel that was too small. They travelled back through time for surgery that could only be done successfully using 20th century medicine.

Claire diagnosed Amanda with a heart condition were as Amanda’s Ductus Arteriosus (a small blood vessel) did not close completely upon birth,thus allowing blood to enter her lungs and not enough oxygen to the rest of her body. In turn Amanda is unable to get nourishment properly and is unable to grow right.
Baby Amanda had a hole in her heart which would normally close by itself but didn’t, which caused a failure to thrive. So they decided to return to get the surgery she needed.
Baby Amanda had a heart defect and needed to be in Roger and Brianna’s time to get it taken care of.
Amanda had a heart defect that was not repairable in the 17th century which would have meant major problems and death as she grew. In the 20th century this is an easily fixed condition.

The hole in their infant daughter’s, Mandy’s, heart, AKA “”failure to thrive,”” fairly easy to repair in modern times with surgery but likely fatal before 1950’s

Roger and Brianna’s daughter, Mandy, was born with a heart defect that needed to be operated on in order for her to survive. Claire couldn’t perform the surgery in the 18th century, so they had to go back to the 20th century and modern medicine.
Could it possibly have a ‘Tetralogy of Fallot’ ?
This is a combination of a hole between the two ventricles, and a narrowing between the right ventricle and the lung artery. The right ventricle has extra work to do to squeeze blood through the narrowing to the lungs, and as it works at high pressure, is able to pump blood directly from it through the intraventricular hole into the aorta.
A murmur may be noted initially and then blueness…
I was born with this condition, and Claire’s diagnosis equates to the above, and I recognise the symptoms.
I hope Mandy grows up as strong and healthy as I have done.

Amanda’s heart defect could not be operated on in the 1700’s but was/is curable in our time…Clare knew how but needed the proper equipment and would not risk it under the conditions.
