Jane AAR mentioned Michael Jackson’s father–I am convinced that the fact that he never really “grew up” led to so much of the controversy in his life. For that, a lot of the blame can be laid at the feet of his parents, particularly his father. Because of MJ’s immense talent, he was viewed as the family’s meal ticket and he never lived any kind of “normal” life. No one can doubt his musical genius, but at some point, even geniuses have to deal with the real world. Part of that involves understanding that certain behaviors that might be acceptable when one is a child (e.g. sleeping in the same bed with other children) are NOT acceptable when one is an adult. Unfortunately, Mr. Jackson surrounded himself with people who never told him “no, you can’t do that”. And that is why he ended up facing those molestation charges and why he became the very odd man-child that he was at the time of his death.
My roommate said, “He died the way he lived his life– wacky and unexpected.” I remember watching some documentary on his life, and they said that his father would always make fun of his nose for being too big. It’s sad how something like that could affect him so much.
I’m showing my years, but I think Jackson did his best work when he was with the Jackson Five. I Want You Back is one of the all time great songs ever.
Poor guy, he went all freaky and after Thriller, I couldn’t even look at him.
I hope his children will be all right – at least now they won’t have to go out with masks on.
